Leaving the car run...

I have heard, was told, but did not read in the owners manual; that you must leave the car running, in nuetral for 2-5 minutes depending on what type of driving was done... Myth or truism?

it's a good idea too, helps get nice cool oil into the bearings, before shutdown so you don't cook them and the turbo

I think five minutes would be a bit excessive. A good minute should suffice, but yes, it's a good idea to let your turbo cool down after some hard driving. It will extend the life of your turbo.
Scoop.

speaking of turbo life... How long you suppose the turbo in this baby will last? I tried to explain to my friend that the 1.8 Turbo is built into the engine. He insists that my engine will not last long due to the strain the turbo will put on the 1.8 litre engine. I am betting in the long run that VW got their poop together on this baby, I bet y'all are too!

also wonder if someone could define hard driving?
I'm assuming a slow, stop and go traffic light "approach" for the last 1-2 miles would be cool enough.
Surely, you can't mean driving slow, then punching it for 00'00"15 seconds then turning off the car = hard driving.
I would think 0-60 at ever light, or 100mph/200km on the freeway or racing would define hard driving.
Is this much care needed for the vr6?
thanks,

I would say hard driving, is just when you have the urge to run up to redline. Or drastically aggressive launches from a stoplight, or 3 rd gear drops at 60mph on the interstate etc.
I would say letting the car idle for a good 30 seconds - 1 minute would be efficeint.
I personally light up a cigerette and let the car run....or after some spirited driving....i simply open the drivers door and turn the car off whe the darn bell stops ringing.
If your too lazy, buy a turbo timer.

Don't worry about it. the 1.8T has been in use in Europe since 1996. There are TONS of them with over 200,000 miles on them over there, many of which are chipped. It's a good strong engine. Well designed and designed from the start with forced induction in mind. The turbo should be good for well over 150,000 miles if well cared for, even more if you use synthetic oil and alow for proper cool down.
