I have a '92 jetta. over the fall, i had transaxels replaced at Les Schwab. a few days later, this weird vibration was coming from the area of my tranny. i took it to my friendly neighborhood Les Schwab and they said everything was fine. i still noticed the vibration later that day and i stopped by a transmission shop. After looking at my car, the shop tech came to me and asked me who last touched the bolts on my transaxels. I asked him why and he said "cause they should be shot." Appearantly, half the bolts on one were MISSING and the rest on that side were finger loose. the other side wasn't finget loose but they weren't tight either. My last car, and audi 4KQ, i had a wheel fly off while driving cause Schwab didn't tighten the lugs on it. The fixed all that though and i was luckily only going about 10 MPH at the time as I had just left a stop sign. Now, just the other day, i took a little roadtrip and near the end, there was a thuding, grinding noise coming from the front end. (this is on the Freeway at 80MPH) At first, i thought it was my CV joint. Maybe not having all the bolts had screwed something up and it had just gone out. I limped to the nearest transmission shop where the tech quickly found that not the axels, but the TWO loose wheels were making the sound. basically, my lugs all have a key, (like a giant allen wrench on one end and a regular lug on the other.) and the tech found that EVERY lug on BOTH front wheel was FINGER LOOSE. he could take all 8 off w/ his hand and the key. and i was just going 80 MPH for about 150 miles and 120MPH the other 50 w/ a Toyota Supra twin turbo. That is just shotty business. Lugs need to be torqued. which is something i do everytime i have anyone work on my car at home but i'm at college now and i don't have my torque wrench here. Just because, why doesn't everyone write out their horror stories w/ Les Schwab. I have their attention now (they're aligning my wheels and giving me half off my next tire purchase) and i could bring in some complaints and maybe it will get passed up the line and they will change their ways. (BTW, those three things were three different shops.)

i hate sounding like an ass, but it is late on my shift at work and im tired so here goes, in my best "not to sound bitchy" mode....
transaxles??? FIX IT YOURSELF. spend the money saved on a tank of gas to cruise with or a new cd.

its all good. stroke patients can be very aggrivating at times. i myself do find it alot cheaper to do things yourself. its the only way to go-and anyone who pays to have things done like that regularly (under normal circumstances) should be shot.

This is classic example of why noooooone touches my car except for me or one of my two very trusted mechs. I will not trust it to any knucklehead who thinks they know how to work on a car when they know less that me (not saying that I know that much either).

I think the same way. I have only one mechanic that I go to only in situations that I can't do myself and those aren't many. Actually he stopped working on cars as a hobby now so I am now screwed and do it all myself. And if I had that much trouble with them why would you take it back 3 different times
That is just dumb. Don't get me wrong I feel for you man but 3 times
Do the work yourself. There is no excuss for not working on your own car. Get some tools and a bentley and you are set. If you are at college maybe see if you can get it in to a shop where you can watch them close and maybe even help out. Does your college have a auto shop? Take it there and do the work yourself if so. My limited experience with anyone but my trusted mechanic has been very bad.

Ditto. My car's goin' in for some work soon, and it only goes to my one mechanic. He's got this really nice VW necklace, and he's the best in this crappy city of a million or something... Only place I'll take it.

Well I've had good luck with les schwab but the only thing i get there are new tires and alignments. They always seem to right their wrongs, such as in your case half off tires? sounds good to me. that's almost $200 they're giving you off of their profit. I bet the guy who did your work got an a$$ chew for it and they will do their best to serve you well. I havn't found a better tire/suspention store out there and i recomend les schwab to anyone. werd.
second. those wheel studs you have with the seperate allen key thingy, they are notorious for comming loose. the studs need to be either loktited in there or made sure to be tightened everytime you take your wheels off. and make sure to retorque them often.

ok, i do all of my own work when i'm at home. I am, however, a college student. I don't think i really have room for a 5'tall, 4'wide roll-around toolbox. the other thing w/ the wheel coming off was after i had my struts replaced. I had them done there, not cause i couldn't, but cause i didn't want to undertake it. I did a complete restoration/mod w/ my friend and his S4 Scirocco. That was a coplete job. all new wiring harness, engine (obviously), tranny, suspension, interior, everything. So please don't treat me like i don't know anything. if i had a torque wrench here, i would.
