Once upon a time I had a DTM style exhaust on my Jetta. Holy hell was that thing loud. It droned and sputtered and popped and yuk....... I know a decent amount about exhaust systems, but not too much about noise control. I would love to get an exhaust system on the new DE GTI when I pick her up, but I can/will not deal with a car that sounds like a single engine aircraft! What are the steps to ensure that your exhaust does not drone/is not too much louder than stock?
(edit for poor grammar)

Re: Let's talk about exhausts (Y2KJTA)

I just replaced my 2000 Passat 1.8t with this 2002 GTI 1.8t - I did a lot of stuff to the Passat - one of which was a Neuspeed exhaust that got really old - it sounded great from outside the car not too loud. It was well made and gave the Passat noticably more power. The Neuspeed exhaust would develop a drone around 3,500 RPM that was really annoying, I tried sound proofing in the trunk and other stuff that helped a little. I'm reluctant to upgrade the exhaust on the GTI - you can see what I've done to the GTI in my signature, this is just the beginning of what I plan to do. I wish it was possible to test drive cars with various after market exhausts to see how they sound. I want a nice mellow deep exhaust note, not some loud, obnoxious, booming, farting noise.

Milltek.
2.5" ss cat back. incredible build quality, no droning what so ever!
Low and deep when you get in it, slightly louder than stock, if you want quiet this is for you...
it's actually too quiet for me. i'm getting the ssTT today!
Too bad you have a jetta, i have one for sale in classifieds for a gti vr6.

Re: Let's talk about exhausts (c1gti)

i was hoping some would say miltek... as c1gti said, the miltek exhaust sounds excelent, it gives you that kick when you turn on the car and open it up at high revs. its not a loud exhaust, in fact, as much as i love the way cars sound with exhausts on them, this is the only exhaust i would ever concider because it isnt loud enough to bother anyone, but it puts out reasonable power and it roars like it the stock exhaust should sound.

That's exactly what I want. Anybody know of a good VR6 exhaust that gives that kinda sound?
Thanks.

I have the Magnaflow. It is not too loud on my VR6. Definately more acceleration.
When slightly straining the motor at fairly low rpms I get a little drone. I just down shift and find the sweet spot. It has a good sound to it.

Re: Let's talk about exhausts (jimk75)

Why not use a resonator piece? When I had an exhaust put on my Golf III, it was awesome but had a horrible drone to it. Then I had a resonator put on, gained some back pressure back which helped throttle response and got rid of the drone.
I've noticed nobody here even mentions doing something like this... is it in fear that it might be too restrictive? Or are there other reasons?

From everything I've heard, Milltek sounds like it'd be what you want. And with the DE, you might not even need the rear valence piece since it has an exhaust cutout already, although it might not be wide enough. Time will tell.

I have a Thermal Research & Development exhaust on my 2000 GTI VR6. I must say the quality of this product is exceptional, it fits perfectly and it doesn't shake due to poor hangers. I paid $600 at the time. It's fully stainless steel and sounds nice. It's deeper than the other exhausts that I have heard on other modified GTIs here in San Diego. It's definitely a lot quieter than the others in cabin and outside. If I had a recorder I would post up a sound sample of it. I am very pleased with this exhaust because it's loud enough to be noticed but not so loud that it's annoying.
I bought my exhaust through this company. They were very easy to deal with and they were very prompt on the shipment.

quote:

SO... SOMEONE BUY MY MILLTEK!!!!

it is great and i've got a 2 month old 2.5" SS VR6 one for a GREAT DEAL!

Why are you selling such a fine exhaust?

i'm selling it because i want something loud, i'm going with the ss 2.5"TT.
the milltek is very quiet and refined, low and deep...it's great if you don't want a drone in you car, but i think drone = music.
i thought about removing the resonator but i don't want to ruin such a good system, and it flows perfectly, i would hate to lose more back pressure.
i guess i'm still a boyracer at heart, i want my vr6 to sound like thunder!
