Lexus GX470 questions

1774 Views 22 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Chiropractor JW
Is this truck entirely new or is it based off a Japanese domestic market Toyota. From the B-pillar back, it looks like a Toyota Landcruiser Prado. Is it a real truck or is it a hybrid?

Re: Lexus GX470 questions (boybaha)

IIRC, it is a more affordable LX based off the Sequoia platform. So GX470 = Seqouia, much like Escalade = Tahoe, or Navigator = Expedition.
Re: Lexus GX470 questions (SpeedRicerDX)

I thought originally that it was built off of the Tundra/Sequoia platform, but apparently the GX470 is a unibody chassis that is based on the next generation Toyota 4Runner platform.
Re: Lexus GX470 questions (ClownCar)

Hmm....right you are, I guess initially everybody was predicting that it'd be off the Sequoia, but it is actually an all-new body-on-frame platform.
Now here's more confusion: Some sites say it will spawn the next 4Runner, some say it is a new platform for the next-generation Sequoia/Land Cruiser, and some say it will be twin of the next Land Cruiser Prado.

Where did you get that info? Edmunds says:
quote:

The vehicle itself retains a durable body-on-frame design, with an independent front suspension and solid-axle rear.

Confirmed by the official press release:
quote:

Lexus chose body-on-frame construction for the new GX 470 because it can provide the high carrying and towing capacity which customers in this segment favor.

The press release also states that this is an all-new platform. So I'm guessing that this is indeed the next 4Runner platform, but it will remain body-on-frame.
Re: Lexus GX470 questions (CanuckPal)

Hmmm... I wonder if Toyota will put that engine into the Hiace minivan series too

Re: Lexus GX470 questions (SpeedRicerDX)

Land Cruiser Prado is nothing more than a 7-seater 4Runner in larger size. Prado is an "in between" of 4Runner and Land Cruiser.
Re: Lexus GX470 questions (A4Jetta)

True... and all of these SUVs- Land Cruiser 100, Land Cruiser 70, Land Cruiser Prado, Hilux Surf (4Runner) and Hilux Pickup are sold by the same dealer network in Japan, Channel Toyota. Guess they have all their eggs in one basket then!
Does anyone know if the gx470 uses a timing belt or a toning chain?

Holy old thread.

It uses a timing belt, needs to be changed every 90k. Other than that these are very maintenance free. Ours has 130k+ and drives like new. Don't be afraid to buy one with higher mileage, but if over 90k make sure the belt was done.
I didn't even realize the GX existed in February 2002.
Why google when you can necrobump? I can't imagine the thought process that lead to replying to a 15 year old thread rather than the usual channels for gathering information
