i just went up there for the first time to watch an ameture club event, and i was very impressed. I really want to get involved with this kind of laid back type of racing, how can i get involved?
You might want to try driving your car on track before you jump in to racing. There are several groups that run these types of events. http://www.audiclubna.org is who I have done most of mine with. Basically you pay anywhere from $300-$400 for two days at the track. You can drive your street car so you dont need to fork out a bunch of money for safety gear. Yo ucan even rent a helmet. NASA is another group that does them. Im sure some of the folks that live in the NE will chime in with some of the other local groups.
When you are ready to go racing there is once again NASA, SCCA, and EMRA runs in the NE as well. You can find rules and requirements for their various classes on their website.
Also look at http://www.comscc.org and http://www.scda1.com.
COM is MA-based, while SCDA is CT-based. Both are great groups (I've done a majority of my driving with COM); from what I've heard, since COM has been around for such a long time, they have the most weekend events compared to all the other groups in the area (PCA, BMWCCA, SCDA, etc).
Don't be put off by COM's name (Corvettes of MA); members drive all sorts of vehicles. In fact, I've only seen one Corvette in 3 events.
SCDA and NASA North East (www.nasanortheast.com) run excellent events that'll get you out on the track.
