A semi-truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and caused the truck to veer off the freeway, hit a large tree and burst into flames on Interstate 205 early Monday morning, authorities said.
The driver of the rig, Jeffrey Hartung, 43, of northeast Portland, was severely injured, according to Karen Eubanks with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.
Hartung managed to escape from the semi and a motorist who stopped to help, Leo Tackett IV, found him lying on the ground next to his burning truck.
Leo Tackett, 32, pulled Hartung to safety. The truck was nearly destroyed by the fire.
