I haven't had a mk5 in a long time, but picked a cheap one up today for a family member who is in need of a cheap decent car, found a decent 07 Jetta Wolfsburg that was priced pretty decent. Car runs and drives great, but there's something goofy with the electrics. I noticed the radio was inop, did a full VCDS auto scan, and got a laundry list of codes, I assumed that it was probably 1 thing at fault due to the massive amount of codes, all of which looked like they would be triggered by a battery drain, and clearly were not issues anymore. I haven't figured out what yet. I'm pretty sure it's going to have to be something with the driver door lock or harness. I read this VW Golf (1K) Door Electronics Driver - Ross-Tech Wiki I'm not going to chase every code, because it looks like a vast majority are from battery drain, and I'm going to guess the radio is unplugged or something from someone trying to prevent a drain (fuses are not pulled). Edit: Oh, the FOB will not unlock or lock the doors, and only the driver door switches will work to unroll any windows. None of the unlock/lock buttons work on any of the doors

Well I'm going to guess it's the driver door module and or harness, I will inspect the harness for damage in the AM. I don't have time to really com through, but the 1k0959702p module is notorious for going out. The **** part is to do a proper repair the front 2 door modules should be replaced along with the can gateway. If anyone finds this on google here's some help

MKV Battery not holding charge

Guys,I have yet another electrical problem on my Golf MK5,if I dont drive the car for a couple of days,battery is flat and I have to use a booster pack to start it. Dont know if it is connected,but I had a rear ABS sensor replaced just before the problem started,although I had noticed before...

So I'm going to be lazy because I don't have time to do anything correct. I'll check the harness for obvious issues, check the ground in general, part hang a new battery just because it could be the issue, these are very picky apparently, if possible I'll part hang another 1k0959702p if I can find one at a yard tomorrow, then blast out all the DTCs from each module. Otherwise if anyone comes across this, I would check your battery and grounds, door harness, then replace the modules. My battery is pretty old, and when I bought the car it started up not horribly, but a touch slow, granted it's about 15 degrees out right now and it was a cold start. I'm just hoping to get lucky with a battery, cleaning, etc. If I had more time, I would do it right, I unfortunately have to drop this car off tomorrow night.

Right now, I'm assuming someone unplugged the radio to mitigate the draw killing the battery. I don't see any fuses pulled or blown. Worst case, it's yeah more than likely #42 is dead, but at least I feel confident enough that's more than likely the issue so if any symptoms progresss in the future it won't have to be in and out of shops trying to figure out what's going on like many of the posts I've read. I would just advise replacing as advised in the ross-tech link.

When I was looking at the car and hooked my vag com up, to see the ****load of codes, it sure as hell looked like the battery kept dying, so like I said, I'm hoping to just get lucky with a new one and cleaning up the grounds, I probably won't but who knows, it's all I can do with the limited time I have and on a sunday of all days. The fuel tank is what gives me hope that it could just be a slightly bad battery or harness, but that's probably a long shot.

Why not post up the complete Auto Scan between code tags and then clear all the dtc & rescan and post up new Auto Scan between code tags so we can see what came back.

Will do, had yet another set back so, the car is now totally inop. Went to start it, battery was dead (shocker). Tossed in a new one expecting it to fire up, nope. Starter solenoid clicks but won't engage. I worked on the car in the street in 10 degrees all day. I don't believe in coincide, I combed every connection, cleaned up all the grounds, anything bolted down red or black that looked dirty I took off and scrubbed down with a wire brush. New batt, brushed the cables down, they are on their tight tight, no accidental not fully on situation. I actually put a cut off on the battery just for a bandaid fix until I can sort out what's going on module or short wise so the car can be driven without killing the battery.

Tried the hammer trick, no dice. Took a jumper cable and tagged it from the neg terminal on the batt to the block just for extra ground for the hell of it, no dice. Starter ground cleaned but looked just fine to start with. Not getting any head light dimming or voltage drop when trying to start. Just hear the solenoid click, and that's it.

Finally gave in bought a starter, becuase it looks like text book starter failure and it was about 6pm and dark out, don't have it up on ramps or jacks because I'm parked on ice, it's 9:45pm now. Couldn't quite get the leverage with a wrench to get the bottom starter bolt out, and my impact is just a touch too long to get a straight shot on the bolt, I don't have a wobble on hand.

Normally I would not do half of those things, I always give the battery the benefit of the doubt, but given it's age, and how many times it's been run flat in a snow state, I'm comfortable enough to just toss a new one in for extra insurance. I wouldn't part hang a starter like that either normally, but again I'm really trying to rush this, and the starter is pretty damn easy to swap out anyways. Wasted majority of my time fiddle ****ing with the bottom bolt just because I'm working on the ground.

Sorry for the late response, been juggling multiple things. So, replaced the starter, and that was that issue. Back to the main thing. I started to diagnose it then had to stop for other reasons. I found the radio was indeed unplugged, the +12v constant is getting +12, the switched is switched, and the ground is ground. The fuse, is blown, I'm suspecting something is shorted to one of the speaker lines. Probably what's causing the issue. (EDIT: The fuse on the back of the radio will blow, not the main fuse in the block)
I also noticed by the lights of the lock switches, all the doors will "obey" lock signal, now I'm having a hard time recalling what I saw, but the rear driver door functioned fine, I forgot what door I was using but I could see all except the rear pass would follow unlocking and locking.

I can clearly tell someone has dug into just about every panel on this car, probably trying to find the root cause. So, I'm wondering what else has been unplugged and possibly replaced. With this I saw that both mirrors are replaced, both function. This looks like body shop work, and they are thinking it's a LIN system. Posted below is the original VCDS autoscan, I don't have a new one yet because somehow I managed to kill windows on my car laptop. Re-formatting it now.

I suspect the fault is going to be either a cut can wire or 12v something thats supposed to probably go maybe to the rear pass? and hitting a speaker? I didn't have the idea to test for voltage on the speaker lines on the harness at the time. What threw me for a loop is everything in this car is dated 2006, but it's a 2007, I also found indications (and eventually confirmed) it was in a small accident. Hopped a curb, took out what I assume was a lamp post, shattered the windshield, dented the roof, took off a mirror, and threw the FR wheel off enough it needs a good pound of lead to balance it (didn't notice on my original inspection because they were the inside stick on weights, I saw this replacing the starter) Trying to figure that out, (and had a theroy maybe someone re-pinned the radio connector to accommodate an after market stereo) the radio looks base, but says premium 7 on the side, weird as hell.

I googled every module PN to see if maybe someone swapped something for something they shouldn't have. One stands out, and I can't confirm it belongs in a 07 jetta LHD car. Address 46 Central Conv. 1K0 959 433 CD. In addtion, I found half a fob case cover, so I'm kinda wondering where the other parts are, maybe someone did the trick of taping it up around the ignition for some dumb reason, then someone went to re-program keys, and wasn't able to because of 2 keys being present, would explain why the FOB doesn't work, random idea anyways.

So far all I have done is pull the radio, and googled, mostly in confusion with the 06/07 thing then got real side tracked with investigating its ownership and eventually finding out what happened to it. Rabbit holed.

Going back to my original thought, driver door. We loaned one of our cars to buy me some time to get this thing road ready. I wake up way early, so I had a chance to tinker quick before work. No voltage on the speaker lines. Then I fiddled with the knob for the mirrors, knob its self felt brokenish. spun it around a bit, then all of a sudden I could get the locks to lock and unlock on all 4 doors. It was intermittent, but best I've seen yet. Tried just popping the connector off that switch to see what happens, no effect. And yet another weird window issue popped up, sun roof like to randomly pop up to vent then close again at random. Now laptop back online. Will run a scan and see what I get after we put a good 40 miles on it. post cat o2 I'm sure is dead, probably will see a lot of the same issues I selectively picked out. Back to harness, module, or there's a few ground points along with T30 and the BCM is worth inspecting as long as I'm in the area. Maybe the old rad just took a blast it never recovered from, guess I could ohm that out and see.

I gotta get to work but when I was decoding the vin just to check the color because I couldn't remember if it was platnium or pewter I found some more detailed info, claimed it had premium, this must just be something I don't know about.

The sunroof is a know issue with knob buy new control or find the DIY on how to clean contacts and see if that fixes it, personally I would replace that thing as I do not want the roof to up when I am not in the car to make sure it closes.

If that's a known issue than I'm with you on that. Last time I had a mk5 was back in.... 2012, looks like some common aging issues have popped up since then. Like I'm prettty sure you can't find a head liner that isn't fallen off lol. Making a list to what to grab from the yard, I might be slight of a part hanger here when it comes to buttons, some just feel crunchy and not right, I'm not as in big of a rush, but I also don't mind spending a couple bucks on switches to see what happens rather than spend the time to clean them, and or build up the contacts with solder to make them work again.

Any other common mk5 faults in the last 10 years I'm un aware of? I just recall the rear brakes being the worst I have ever had, not so much of a fault, but VW could have designed the bias better IMO.

OT: But, anyone wouldn't happen to know the time limit on these recalls? There's a select few if I could get done for free I would for sure, in fact this first one I recall kicking off in my 07 back in 08-09 because I could feel a thump on the floor, went to the dealer, and said bad CV/Axle. They didn't believe me. Until they finally swapped the axle, and it went away.

You have a '07 so you might be past the 15years( from the date of original sale ) for a free fix. Recalls do not expire but who is going to pay for them will. Tire recalls have a different time frame 180 days from notification.

Your last two recalls posted would only be covered by VW if the dealer did repairs with those aftermarket parts. You will be able to see if those repairs were ever made by VW by pulling its history from any dealer.

Yeah I understand that, haven't looked to see what's in it, but hey maybe someone did, worth a look at least. I think safety and emission recalls don't ever expire, I was at least told that by the toyota dealer when I found my cat had a recall on my Gen 2 Tacoma. That's an 11 year old truck. Others yeah do have a time frame of so many years before its void. That's my only personal experince with the matter, and seems logical enough.
