looking at a B4 for my girlfriend... a good idea?

Pic here..
although I'm sure you all know what a black B4 looks like.
its a 1995 GLX with 112k. I'm just worried about the maintenence costs. It's in beautiful shape right now but with my old scirocco, that just meant something was going to break that much sooner

How about some B4 lovers to reinforce the choice to get this car?
it seems like it would be more expensive to fix than a jetta or a golf of the same quality. if tons of stuff breaks I'll probably catch hell from her parents.. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

My B4 is more on maintence then our other cars, even when i bought the car a week later i started notice things wrong, we bought it as is... but not that bad , it could be worse like having to put your car in a shop all the time an paying an arm & a leg for something you can do at home and save http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
but seriously if your worried about catching hell from her parents then maybe you should buy her something more like a bran new car

I wouldn't suggest a B4 automatic for your girlfriend. Passats already require lots of maintenance, but a VR6, automatic Passat, will especially require alot of maintenance. Sorry to shoot down your idea.

How about a Passat 5spd? If you can find one that has been cared for, it shouldn't have too many complications. Also something about a girl that drives a 5spd, especially a VW, that excites me. Maybe your gf getting a 5spd Passat will bring you all closer together.
I wish I had a gf that liked VWs, maybe one day.

I agree with the 5 speed recommendation. The auto's just plain bad according to a lot of B4 Vortexers (auto tranny meltdowns are very common on the car). The parts on a B4 is definitely more expensive than the typical Japanese equivalents. Just to give you an idea, the small 2" diameter VW logoed wheelcaps on the 97 GLX alloys were priced by some dealers at $33.00 EACH!, EEAAACCHHH!
Now this is for a small piece of cheap plastic trim! But, I guess I'm picking out what might be the worst examples of B4 parts high dealer pricing. If you can do some of the maintainance on the B4, it will really help keep the costs down and keep the car on the road, but don't expect it to be the typical appliance - like japanese domestic mobile that you just put gas in and forget it.

yeah I wasn't driving towards that.... she is definitely pushing for a european car anyways and I think costly repairs are kind of a given

i just saw this clean passat for $6000 I thought I would see if there are any known problems... seems like the auto tranny is definitely one though. she does want to learn to drive standard, and I would LOVE to teach her... but I just got a stage 3 clutch put in my car so I don't know about that. either way, thank you for all the replies. the passat isn't out of the picture yet but we'll see.

I agree with the posts above. Though we like our cars, a Toyota is the way to go for a used car for a girlfriend.

whoahoho I wouldn't wish a toyota on ANYONE
i guess I should have given some background. we've been together for over 2 years and she has always loved my car and looks forward to Waterfest each summer almost as much as i do. she is definitely looking for a VW (or other euro car) and it's not just me saying so.
anyways, we drove the car today and we were not impressed with the auto. otherwise the car was super clean and will make a great car for someone... but I couldn't believe how the auto spoiled the VR6. I've had the chance to drive my friends VR6 jetta and loved the engine but linked to the auto tranny in the passat we really couldn't get that engine to purr like it should. plus like penya79 said, we're worried about the little things... so many luxury stuff to bust and she really doesn't want heated seats or leather or etc etc. anyways thanks for the help guys & gals

Hell with that, the Geo Prizm is the best buy since it IS a Toyota (Corolla) rebadged.
Re: looking at a B4 for my girlfriend... a good idea? (ReverendHorton)

I've had VWs for 20 years. Compared to my VWs, my friends with Toyotas have cars that are bullet-proof.

I never insulted toyota's reliabilty... only it's boringness, cheap interior, inability to climb slight grades.... and my friend's corolla has broken down plenty of times so don't act like they're invulnerable.
honestly guys... this is a VW board!
geo prizm.... toyota corolla... suburu legacy...
