Looking at an A2 GTI...

I've got a line on (what is supposed to be) a '86 GTI. The car has been kept as a toy, obviously worked on (owner claims it's got a 2.0l engine, which wasn't in GTIs until 1990...), hasn't been registered.
Looking at picking it up as a 'learn about cars' car, as well as eventually rallycross.
The good:
Engine starts well, sounds good.
It's a Mk2 GTI for cheap.
It has A/C.
The Bad:
Bad fuel pump prevents it from actually running.
Fair amount of external body rust.
Will need to have windshield replaced before registering.
ODO reads 460k!!!???
Asking price is $800. What do you think?

sounds like you in for a lot of work. If you don't mind having this sit in a garage for a few years while you tinker with it, it could be okay. You're talking about registering it which makes me think this might be a daily driver for you. From your description it sounds like a decent amount of work and money will be spent to get it in reliable shape. Rust doesnt' soudn good to me though unless you have someone that can do body work for cheap or free..I'd hold out for something a little cleaner. Another 500 bucks to your price can get a you a lot nicer car.
