Losing Brake Fluid

495 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Bartnik
I was hoping if ya guys could help me with this dilemma:
I am losing brake fluid in my 74 Super. The level of fluid keep dropping. I checked the master cylinder and the wheel cylinders but none of them are leaking. But, underneath the spare tire where it goes into the tunnel there is leakage of fluid. What is leaking, and how could I fix it? Thanx. VS OUT

Re: Losing Brake Fluid (Strobe)

well the only fluid in the tunnel is fuel. make sure that you dont have a fuel leak. give it a good sniff. your brake fluid resivoir is located up top and i seriously doubt that brake fluid could make its way to the front like that. but anything is possible. check on the floor board in front of the master thats a common leak place. and follow the brake line from front to back and check for leaks. also the blue hoses fro resivoir. they tend to crack. and have you pulled the drums to check the wheel cyls? if its a slow enough leak the brake shoes and dust tends to soak it up. hope this helps

Re: Losing Brake Fluid (16v po boy)

Thanx 16v po boy but, I checked all things: wheel cylinders, blue lines, in front oof master. It is not a small leak. The level falls pretty quick. VS OUT.
Re: Losing Brake Fluid (Strobe)

It is leaking somewhere. Probably it is leaking from the rear seal of the master cylinder (the master cylinder is located in the area below the luggage compartment and immediately forward of the front bulkhead. It's right on the other side of the brake pedal.
Pull off the left front wheel and have a look at the master cylinder. Either one of the fluid supply hoses from the reservoir in the trunk to the master cylinder is leaking or the master cylinder itself is leaking. I had a Karmann Ghia where the master cylinder rear seal was leaking. Problem is this is hard to spot because it leaks into the front bulkhead and you don't see the fluid dripping out anywhere.
