Finally got my pics on a web server. As some of you already know, I picked this up last week. I was back and forth between a few different colors. After spending a week with the Blue Anthracite, I absolutely love it. It looks dark at night, and looks a lot lighter in the day. I tried to include shots which showed it in some different lighting. This was just after I washed it, but the car doesn't really have any wax on it yet. I don't think the dealer waxed it judging from the "feel" of the paint finish. In any case, I just got my package today from CMA with the Klasse AIO and SG. Can't wait until the first weekend with decent weather! Well, here are the pics...

Re: Lots of pics of my new '02 GLX in Blue Anthracite/Black (Michael_B)

Looks really nice Michael! Good choice! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
We might get some temps in the 40's around here this weekend which is probably the minimum for the Klasse twins if you're working outdoors. You won't have a problem with the AIO but the SG might be stubborn buffing off (use some QD if it is). Definitely get some protection on that beautiful paint as soon as possible.
Enjoy and I'll be looking out for you.

The car looks beautiful man, glad to see you got the manual in the GLX. Something funny I noticed though was in my Mom's GLX, the dealership installed the Cd player above the head unit, and your's is reverse.

I thought all the new ones were coming with the dual-din cassette/CD player unit?

I think it's a running change, my dealer told me that some 2002's still came with the single DIN.
Hey, Mike, BEAUTIFUL car!
Do you have any high-resolution pictures? I would love to have them, as I'm looking into buying a twin to your car.

Well, I was hoping to get the new dual DIN unit, but now that I have this one, I actaully like it a lot. Since I wanted them to find one with the built-in CD, and they couldn't, they offered to put in the CD player for free. I think that 2002 model year cars built after August '01 came with the dual DIN.

Actually, I think they put the one in your Mom's the wrong way. The picture below is taken from the VW accessories page. However, I know there are a few others who installed them on their own that did it the same way as in your Mom's car. Functionally, there is no difference, so it really comes down to personal preference. To me, I don't think it would matter either way - although since I fiddle with the radio more than the in-dash CD, it's probably easier for me to have the radio on top.
Thanks for the nice comments!

Mike, Mind if I ask where you purchased this beautiful machine? I'll be jumping in soon and am looking for a decent (notice I didn't say good!) Boston area dealer.

Shipwreck (not sure I want to know how you got that name!), I got the car at Bernardi in Natick on Rt. 9. I dealt with Dimitrius, who was a really nice guy to deal with. They are pretty convenient, as they are just off the Rt. 30 exit off the Mass Pike. They ended up swapping one of their cars with a dealer in upstate NY to get mine. Everything worked out flawlessly. Hopefully their service department ends up being decent...

Mike...I got mine at Bernardi also. I only brought it there once for service(CD player install, broken bolt on the license plate and first oil change) and they were very accomodating. They are extremely busy and seem to have to schedule most service appointments a few days out.
BTW, I think that for the 01.5 and on the radio moved to the top of the stack. For 01's and before(all B5's), I believe the radio was in the middle of the stack. I think that is why our radio is on top.

Good to hear that their service was decent. As for the radio mount, the picture I posted from the vw accessories site is definitely an older Passat (pre '01.5), as indicated by the center console design and cupholder location.

Long story on the name....Anywho, I know exactly where Bernardi is, I've poked around there a couple of times. They don't seem to have a large number of cars on the lot, however their web site always lists a fairly large number of Passats in inventory. Do you know if they keep their cars elsewhere?
How were they with the dealer swap? Were they still accomodating price-wise even though the car wasn't coming off their lot?

Shipwreck - Bernardi has a couple of "offsite" lots where they keep their cars. Also, they just moved or are in the process of moving their Audi Line further east on Rte. 9 (old Daewoo dealership?) so I would assume that they'll have more VW at the dealership.

As Mr. Bouton said, they do have many cars offsite at a satellite lot. As for the price, my car was originally an order. I placed an order, and after 2 weeks I decided I didn't want to wait, so I had them locate a car. The price didn't change at all for the swapped car. They did want to charge me $200 extra, but I said I didn't want to pay that because when I placed the order originally, I specifically asked whether or not it would be a problem if I decided to just have them locate a car versus waiting for my ordered car to come in. They said no problem, since they wouldn't have a problem selling the Blue Anthracite/Black 5-speed GLX that I ordered.
They also never mentioned anything at that time about me paying anything extra if I did decide to have them locate one instead. So when it came time to locate one, and the sales manager tried to tack on the $200, I reminded my sales guy that I had that conversation with one of the sales managers before (may not have been the same sales manager, as they have 2 or 3 there), and that was that. They dropped the request for the extra $200. The swap car was way out in upstate NY, probably 150 miles or so away. So between having the driver drive all the way there and back, it was practically an all day affair. They have to pay these drivers, so I didn't think it was unfair of them to want the extra cash.
I don't think how they acquired the car (lot, swap, order) had too much impact on my purchase price. I paid 3% over invoice of $26,664, and I am not so sure that I would have done better if I had taken a car off their lot. Their actual invoice was a little higher than the invoice price of $26,664 that you see on Edmunds and Carpoint. They had some fees in their like port fees, and some other fees. Regardless, my final purchase price was almost exactly 3% over the $26,664 number.

I bought a blue anthracite 1.8t in the boston area from Quirk VW in Quincy (which is closer to Milford, no?) I tried Boston VW, Minuteman VW (in Bedford), and swung by Bernardi. None of them had exactly what I was looking for but, quite a few were "curious" if I'd gone by Quirk. Apparently Quirk is the "largest dealer in the country" and has the largest inventory in general. I actually put a deposit down for a different car at one of the other dealers who said they couldn't find the exact car I was looking for on their lot or anyone elses before finding out that Quirk had the EXACT car I was looking for. And get this- I showed up at 4:00 the day before Thanksgiving and walked out with a fully registered and inspected 2002 Passat by 5:30. A great dealership experience all around.

Actually, Bernardi is a lot closer to Milford than Quirk. Colonial is also close, but that was the scariest dealership I have ever been to. I felt like I needed a shower after leaving their showroom. It was really crusty looking and had a high-pressure sales atmosphere that was a serious turnoff.
