Ok, I've done everything I can think of--fuel filter, K&N Air Filter, new plugs, new wires, all new belts, hell EVERYTHING. I still get around 23-25 mpg on the highway, I drive 34 miles one way. What am I overlooking? BTW, I have significantly reduced my right foot action but no improvement. What do y'all average for MPG? Or is this about right?

Re: Low MPG--WTF? (Apoidea)

I feel your pain. I get around 20MPG on my 2.0, and I can't seem to fix it. I brought it to the delaer thinking it was my O2 sensor, but it wasn't.
I probably need to change my fuel filter too.
But I don't know what is going on. These cars should have on average a fuel economy in the upper20s to 30s

You mileage will drop if you are running rich. Do you have a way to check? Was it higher and recently dropped? What did you replace your plugs with and did you gap them properly?

Re: Low MPG--WTF? (JettaRed)

They are gapped to spec and when I got the car it needed all those repairs (and then some), and fuel economy was around 20-22 MPG. So it is an improvement but the VW release says 23city/29highway. Maybe it's a vacuum leak?

LOL. Man, oh man, oh man! You gonna believe that? Your car is normal. It's not worth scratching you head over for a few extra mpg. Keep in mind, those mpg ratings are under optimal conditions. You want that kind of mileage, you have to drive VERY gently.
Don't sweat it any more. Just drive and be happy.
If there was a vacuum leak, your car would run awful--not just get bad mileage. (And, BTW, while not great, you mileage isn't bad.)

I would sweat it. I get over 31MPG on the highway with my current mods and when I calculted it I wasn't light on the right pedal either. Something ain't right

Re: Low MPG--WTF? (Apoidea)

I had the same problem too with my 00 2.0litre NB. It started after I changed to a Neuspeed P-Flo.I was only averaging 20MPG(in town). Then the check light came on and the dealer replaced the O2 sensor under warranty. 24mpg (in town). Recently. It started doing it again and the dealer checked it and claimed that the P-Flo was robbing gas. Nah. then the VWoA recall came. Now. The engine runs smoother (feels like I chipped it) and the mpg should improve. I just got the car back day before yesterday. Last weekend I went out of town and I got 27mpg (highway) but the recall wasn't performed yet. Only got a new O2 sensor. (Yes the O2 sensor was replaced the second time).

Re: Low MPG--WTF? (kumbang)

I don't understand it, i thought it was my o2 sensor for sure that was killing my MPGs. I was getting like 17 city. i brought it to the delaer b/c it is still under warranty and they said that no codes came up for saying that the o2 sensor was not working correctly. So I changed my plugs and wires and got it up to 20MPG city, but something isn't right.
If my car has no Check Engine Light on what could be wrong with the car/ what parts would need to be replaced that do not show up w/ a CEL light?

Have you done your recall? The 2.0litre engine had undergone a recall. Check with the dealer. First time we called to get the recall done, they said wait for the letter. Then when the check light engine came on, I insisted on doing the recall.
Other option is to chip you car and change exhausts.

Your dealer is an idiot or a liar. If it's the latter, they just don't want to go through the hassle to get VWoA to approve an out-of-warranty repair. A bad O2 sensor will not necessarily throw a code, it will just give the ECU wrong information and the ECU will make the wrong adjustment to your fuel delivery.
I'm not saying that a bad O2 sensor won't throw codes, just that it doesn't necessarily throw codes, especially if it's starting to go bad.

No, no recall. Just bought it from an individual in town, and he said nothing of that. What is recalled? Am I eligible? I have no CEL and otherwise run problem free. Car is all stock, minus the KN Air Filter, and I replaced O2 sensor yesterday (and the exhaust soon). Also, when warm, engines idles @ 600rpm--is this part of the problem or another one altogether? Thanks . . .

That does not sound too awfully bad. I get 27-28 consistantly on a combination of highway/city. I've only got a TT chip, K&N drop in, and exh. and drive like an A-hole. I think I have mine floored about 50% of the time just trying to get the thing to get out of its own way.

Re: Low MPG--WTF? (Apoidea)

I don't think the idling should affect fuel economy at all. The recall was for the 2.0litre engine in which VWoa have data in where the emiisions is screwed up. Therefore they did a recall to do some updgrades. If I am not mistaken, they changed the O2 sensor and did some software upgrades to the ECU( I am not sure as this is not listed in the work order).
Check with the dealer to see if you are eligible. Mention that you bought the vehicle used . This shouldn't be a factor not to perform the recall.

The recall was for the AEG engine, 99.5 and newer.
You should be idling around 800 rpm. Is it consistently low at 600 rpms? Have you measured if you're running rich? It will be coded in the fault codes, but may not cause the light to come on.

Yes, in D it's @ 600rpm, in P @ 800rpm. I'm new to the game, so forgive me: how do I rectify running rich? Price & Parts? Or is this a mechanix deal (I can do most repairs though, at least on my Acura
) ?
