I was just wondering this. I like 17inch wheels and getting 18" in canada is dangerous since our roads just royally suck... But the reason I dont like 17" is because they got them HUGE ass tires. Can I get like 40 maybe 35 tires for 17"???

215/40/17 will be a HUGE change from 225/45/17... diameter will be 1.2" less, and ur sidewall will be .6" smaller.... also, you will have approx a 4.8% speedo error (aka, it says 60MPH, but u are really doing ~57)

sorry but this doesn't make much sense -just go ahead and get 18's, I mean with that tire change you a affectively going to have the same side wall as an 18" - not trying to slam you, but more like caution. But hey, if that's what floats your boat then

That won't work. You're responsible for maintaining your equipment.

So it really has nothing to do with our roads being bad, does it? Because if it did, you wouldn't want such short sidewalls with 17's either. The extra sidewall compared to 18's is what's going to protect your rims from those maneating potholes out there. Putting 35 or 40 series rubber on your 17's defeats the purpose.
If you really can't afford 18's, then don't do it.... Unless you are willing to live with the speedo error, higher rpm's, inflated odometer readings, slightly worse fuel economy, slightly faster acceleration (due to the effectively shorter gearing), and no more protection from bad roads than 18's.
