Lower control arm???

Hi everbody!
I have 2000 GLS 1.8 T with 19,000 miles on it, and I had no problems at all till a week ago.
I started hearing FRONT-END noise while braking. Took the car to the Devon Volkswagen, and dealer replaced lower control arms replaced.
Is this normal? Did anybody have similar issues with their Passat.
I love my cars (2 Passats, and Jetta (wife)), but to replace lower control arms after only 19,000 miles makes me worried!

Control arms needing replacement are common, but usually more like 40k before they start creaking. Do a search here and on clubB5.com for plenty of discussion....
