okay if you use a dremel tool to cut away the lip that you attach the fender flare to do you just epoxy the flare back on to the sheetmetal since there is no lip to screw it back onto?

Well I didn't use a small Dremel to cut my lips away but uses some thing a little bigger and more professional (German qualtity tool).
My plan is to glue the flares on the top where I have cut away most of the lip (where you need to cut) and on the sides I use some small screws/glue.
This is on my project car. Look in my sig. for pic.

how much wheel travel do you get doing this before your wheel rubs the top?i have coilovers on my car so i can adjust for the ride height

i didn't use any fancy german tool or dremel tool. just an old fashion louiseville slugger. it worked well for my application (h&r coilovers).
take care,

Re: m how to modify wheel arches (Nashty Rabbit)

how did you put your flares back on?
Re: m how to modify wheel arches (tibbar)

Just don't

I hate the look of plastic on my car. But that's just me. I'm gonna be doing some serious clearancing when my 14x8 et15 wheels come in.......
Especially considering I'm running 60mm springs. Hmm.

Re: m how to modify wheel arches (Speedemon)

you know, this is gonna sound very dumb...but I still haven't figured out that baseball bat method
I mean, do you jack the car up and do it w/ the wheels on or take the wheels off, can someone elaborate on this method for me.
Thanks

Re: m how to modify wheel arches (Speedemon)

I need to clarify something about the suspension on the mk1 golf. On my project car I am going to run 8x15" offset18 with 195/45-15" and to be sure I got enough space for my wheels I took out the springs/bump-stops and put a jack underneath the ball joint and jacked the suspension up all the way until the bottom part of the strut hit the top spring perch (No more travel). See picture below for maximum lowering with original struts (Do remember that the wheel on the picture has a smaller diameter than the original).
The only way to get the wheel further up is by using a coil-over kit with shorter strut.

I want to have this as the ride height, but it all depends on the lowering kit I am going to use (Spring stiffness and max. travel).
The front wheels will pass underneath the flares to give me some travel. Hopefully

well, here our local fireman are converting their GTI to a convertible with the jaws of life

A close up of their tool of choice

It apears that they may have gotten carried away..... hell, if I had that tool, I would to.

Re: m how to modify wheel arches (Big CADDY)

Ummm, so how exactly do you do this again? I need a step by step here on how to roll the fenders w/ a baseball bat.
Thanks!!
PDX Cabby has the solution. I'm fond of rolling with a baseball bat (in warm temperatures) as opposed to removing metal. It's faster and works just the same; with the exception of a few wheel sizes.
You might check out some of the advertisers in the back of Grassroots Motorsports for some 14x7's. I do know that it is not a common size with our bolt pattern. I'm sure that some Miata's are running them, you might look at http://www.Miata.net
