He says an M3 would win a 1/4 mile, I say an M5. I know its off topic, but I've seen alot of talk about these cars here. Loser pays the tab tomorrow night at the bar, and I would love to drink for free.
Really? That close? I thought for sure that an M5 would win by a lot. I don't know anything about BMW's but I'd think that for the extra $$$ it wouldn't be a close race.
Both Cars are Running low 13's quarter mile times...
The M5 has 395hp V8... And the M3 has a 333hp I-6...
The M3 is a lot lighter than the M5.. id say itll come down to the driver.. definately.
Not going by C&D reports or any other reports ( that have the 2 cars almost identical ) it's really amazing what German engeneering can accomplish. BMW took 2 totally different power engines [ I6 and V8 ] and tested them over and over again to achieve near perfect clones of speed. My friend and I always have this conversation [ he the M5 lover, and me the M3 fan ] It really all comes down to the driver because the car's stats in 0-60 and 1/4 mile are very very very close. In the long run the M5, of course, would pull ahead but that's simply becuase of the higher displacement.
Just for the record: Car and Driver M3 [ tested June 2001 ]
0-60 / 1/4-mile 4.7 / 13.4 M5 [ tested March 2000 ]
0-60 / 1/4-mile 4.8 / 13.3
I've seen other test where the M5 ran a 4.7 / 13.4 so...
Hope that helps!

Oh, didn't know that. In Europe M5's got 400 hp and M3 343 hp.

That's because horsepower is measured slightly differently in Europe.
