After years of experience, it's just clutch control. In most states, if you roll back and hit the guy behind you, it's his fault for following to close

That is called tailgating. I have been ticketed once for it; however, it wasnt because of an accident like in the example above. I was in heavy traffic and I was following a Police Investigation Unit van too close for the officer comfort at that rate of speed. The Xwy was bumper to bumper, but we were moving along at about 60MPH, which is pretty good at 4:30pm in a Miami Xwy on a Friday rush hour period. How close was I? Somewhere between a foot and a foot and a half from his rear bumper

Yup, just clutch control.
Here is what I did at first. Just have your foot on the brake, slowly let off the clutch until you feel it start to grip. Then dump the brake, get on the gas and you shouldn't have rolled back far at all.

Here is an easy way if someone might be too close to your bumper. Pull up the ebrake....when the light turns green have one hand on the ebrake....let out the clutch while giving gas....at the same time you should be letting out the ebrake. If dont right you just go no roll back. I only use this on a very steep, but works pertty well.

For me it's easier to control the clutch with a bit more throttle. So I go heavy on the gas when I'm going up a slope and *then* ease up on the clutch. I don't roll backwards too much this way. You'll get the hang of it!

practicing and gettin used to your clutch is everything. But to start out, use Bundaho's idea with the handbrake. it will save a clutch.

I agree 100% with you, I think its the best method (ebrake) for steep hills or not so steep hills if you don't have the confidence in your clutch control yet. Even when I started to drive manual this technique worked for me and I found it was very easy to accomplish, plus it removed the fear of rolling back into the car behind me.
