My brake pedal sinks to the floor really fast as of last night. Its actually kinda an adventure to drive right now. I looked under the hood, and the level of fluid seems ok, and there aren't any leaks from right around the master cylinder. Is there anything else it could be? Also, are all the master cylinders the same? Cause at checker (shucks, cragen, whatever) there are three different VIN things listed. each one is just 2 letters. Finally, are there any tricks, tips, etc on replacing them? I've done the one on my old volvo, I have a complete set of ratchets and wrenches, a haynes, a bently, and I know I have to bleed the brakes. TIA

it can also be the actaul calipers on your disc brakes that are leaking, or the slave cylinder on the drums, check at each wheel for signs of leaking brake fluid, and check all the brake lines.
hope that helps

I don't have drums, so that's not a factor, but tonight I'll take off each wheel and check around. thanks. Another thing: what is "bench bleeding" the master cylinder? It probably says in the bently, but I'm at work, just wondering.

It involves putting the master cylinder in a vise or something to hold it down and running lines from the master cylinder back into the resevor. It is basiclly just pumping fluid in a circle back into it. This will get the majority of air out of the master cylinder before you put it on the car.

It is highly recommended and on some new master cylinders they won't honor the warrenty if you don't do this. It is kind of hard on the seals if you don't. Also it is much much easier to get all the air out if you do this first. There is a lot of air in there if you don't do this. Technically no I guess you don't have to but I would.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my proportioning valve. The pedal would slowly go all the way to the floor.

If you're not losing brake fluid it's probably your MC, check around your calipers/brake hoses to make sure, for the right MC call the dealer and ask them for the part # then use it to buy an aftermarket. To check your proportioning valve have someone apply your brakes with the car on the ground and reach under the car to see if the valve activates, it'll move back and forth on the spring. You don't have to bench bleed your MC, never done that on mine or anyones.

Re: MASTER CYLINDER quick ?s (estus)

the 3 different part numbers are for the different combinations of units that were used. I know that some have wider bot patterns on the vacume booster side and this will effect which one you can get away with using. Mine was leaking(vacume booster) and i took one out of another car and foundout that it didn't bolt up to the mastercylinder. So after 2 failed attempts i'm still looking for the correct one. goodluck
