I don't know how to open my gas lid!

You don't know how stupid this makes me feel. I consider myself a car guy. I've taken off intake manifolds, carbs and all sorts of other engine accessories, but I can't seem to figure out my gas lid.
Sorry for the stupid post, but no one in this stinking building owns a VW.

uh, the lid door? dude, just pull. the central locking doesn't also control the fuel filler door does it? if that's the case, i suppose the actuator in the trunk could have failed, but you should still be able to open this. this may be the only non-smartazz response to your post.

There should be a small cut corner in the bottom left of the cover for a finger tip. They cut them small enough that there kinda hard to see.

my rocco has central locking and it locks the gas door too. i have thought of that vacumm activator failing before. open the hatch, pull back the carpet where the gas cap thing would be, and look. does it have central locking on gas cap? dunno,i ama rocco guy, but i know how they work. might be a vacum leak in the system?

that would be a bitch.
btw: if it does, you can just pull the actuator with your hand to openthe lid.

haha...the lid? just pull on it! then unscrew the gas cap and remember not to leave it on top of the pump when your done. how do you put gas in your other cars??

Thanks for the serious replies guys. I tugged and pulled on the damn thing and stopped short of ripping it off. I also noticed that my trunk lid wouldn't open either. Can you just unlock all the doors by pulling up on the driver's side?

try to lock, then unlock the drivers door. that is the main control for the central locking system. maybe a stuck valve? dunno, but it sounds like you might have to crawl in your hatch from the front to do this stuff.

my 1986 Golf Gti's lid doesnt lok so i would take your finger and open it. If you dont care too much about the paint.....try a crowbar

Actually, the paint isn't bad, so I think any self-inflicted damage is out of the question. I'll try the lock thing. Also, I don't have a hatch, I have a trunk.

an 86 GL shouldnt have power locks...

Hmmm....I've got power windos, locks, and mirrors and I'm positive my car is a GL.

my GLI has everything...cruise, power windows/locks/mirrors(heated)/seats, central locking: the works!
BUT
my gas hatch doesnt lock shut. its just a regular door like any other A2.

Just had to hold the key in the unlock position a little longer, but it's now working.
