More appealing than anything Mazda makes right now.
(miata doesn't count)

I love the car but I would have to swap the damn altezza tail lights out for normal ones before I would be seen in it, sorry.

The MX-3 V6 was only a 1.8
And I, for one, hope it IS a lot like the K-Series V6. That's a wonderful little engine. http://www.bradbury.cwc.net/probemx/index.htm http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Proposed engines are:
2.3L 4-cyl, new engine designed by Mazda w/variable valve timing and I believe variable intake mated to a new tranny. This should be a nice engine with rumored output in the ~165hp range.
3.0L 6-cyl, Built on Ford's Duratec w/heads & intake done by Mazda(includes variable valve timing and I think variable intake as well). This should actually be a good motor as the problems with previous Duratec's is that the Bean-Counters had stripped the efficient breathing gear and made them use injection molded intake manifolds w/molded throttle bodies. Since this block is designed for high RPM use (nice short stroke), it never did well in Ford's applications as it was choked on the high end and had the wrong crank/rod/bore geometry to offer any significant low end. The initial numbers for this indicate that it should be a nice rev-happy motor that should match the sporting intentions of this car when mated to a stick. I fear that it will be a poor match for the auto however, which may very well cause many of the main-stream buyers to look elswhere.
Depends on what auto transmission. If it's a tiptronic and/or is smooth and slick then no problems.
Surely there will be a diesel for JDM and Euro markets, likely a 2.0 though I hope a bigger capacity diesel can be made so they can compete with VW's Passat TDI.
