Here is the statement of proof:
The optional engine (standard in the 5-door) is the same 2.3 litre DOHC four found in the larger and heavier Mazda6 and the B2300 truck. With 160 horsepower and 150 lb. ft. of torque it endows the Mazda3 with a serious and welcome dose of steroids, clearly evident at all speeds.

It's also in the Focus too. Mazda's in charge of all of Ford's 4-cylinder development now.

So the Ranger gets the pushrod 2.3 and the B2300 gets the DOHC engine?
What the? I didn't find many technical specs on the Ford site.

They're different engines. The truck's 2.3 motor is a different, older design than the MZR family motors that are in the 3 and 6.

Ummm, wasn't the old 2.3L engine in the Ranger replaced by the new 2.3L engine that is of the same family as the 2.3L engines in the Focus, 3, and 6 (and 2.0L engine in the 2005 Focus)?

yeah, i THINK that the 2.3 in the ranger/B2300 gets its roots from the pinto engine.

starting for the '05's, it's only available in the sedans
, so if u wanna PZEV hatch, u better get an '03 or '04.

Re: Mazda3's 2.3 liter engine comes from the Ranger/B2300!! (RJetta8V)

The Pinto had an SOHC 8v 2.0, which was later enlarged to the SOHC 8v 2.3 for the Mustang, Fairmont, etc.
These engines are completely unrelated to the MZR/Duratec series four cylinders, which are also 2.0 and 2.3 liters.
The B2300 and Ranger used to use the Pinto-derived 2.3.
The B2300 and Ranger have used the MZR/Duratec since 2002.

Why is it so hard to believe that the old 2.3L engine was replaced by a new 2.3L engine in the Ranger?
Remember that the Focus had two different 2.0L engines from 2000-2004, and a third 2.0L engine starting in the 2005 model year. They are all of different designs (the new 2.0L engine is of the same family as the 2.3L engine in the Focus, Ranger / B2300, 3, and 6).

2 engines can have the same displacement and have nothing in common...*gasp*
and yeah, the SVO/XR4Ti/TC/etc was the Lima 2.3L, aka the pinto 2.3L. that's not really grounds to make fun of it though, considering you can make 400rwhp on a stock short block, and 750hp in race applications.

The Pinto engine came in 2 and 2.3 liters. It was a very good engine, as was the very nice 4 speed transmission that it was mated to. Yes it was used in a variety of later Fords for many years, including the Ranger.
It has nothing to do with the current family of engines in the Mazda 3 adn 6.

Re: (kmead)

Back to the original point of this thread...yes, the Mazda3 2.3L is the same as the current Ranger/B2300. My question is; so what?

wow...thats the same configuration as the VW 2.0 that they're still putting into cars today...in 2004!! I can't think of any other manufacturer that has an 8v 4-cyl...good thing its going away for the MkV.
