"Do not exceed the maximum mark on the dipstick, or the catalytic converter will be damaged." How is the damage done? Does the crank splash excessive oil upon the cylinder walls? Or does the excess oil go throught the recirculation system in the valve cover, into the intake manifold? What are we talking about here?

Yes, basically oil gets through the breather system, engine burns them (not well) and that hits the cat and fouls it. Usually takes a massive overfill to get this.
