Some of the 85 and 86 GTIs have oil temperature readings that are 50–60°F too low. That is, it will read 150°–160° F when the oil temp is actually 210°–220°F. (I measured temperature with a known accurate mercury thermometer as a reference.)
In my case I swapped the sender—which made no change. I took it to the dealer who checked the spec., and claimed that because VW puts no tolerance on the readout (+ or - a specific number of degrees) the readout cannot be out of spec. Consequently the dealer would do nothing.
My guess is that the small computer in the MFA is inaccurate.
Has anyone figured this out?
Thanks for your help and ideas.
