I’m mainly starting this thread as a place of reference. If I can help someone along the way then that’s great too. There is a lot to update so I'll be making sure I date when things where originally done.

How I choose the Golf R:

When the MK7 Golf R was released I thought it was the perfect car for me...well having a sunroof would have made it perfect but it’s not something I miss now. I thought the exterior looked great along with the interior and the power was finally competitive with it’s class.

However, when I was ready to buy there weren’t any cars available around me (Brooklyn, NY) and the ones that were available had been marked up considerably. I looked at the MK7 GTI and that for the money it’s a great car, but this time around I wanted something that was around 300hp and had a different drivetrain (AWD or RWD instead of FWD).

I then started to look at used (2013 or 2014) Audi S4’s and BMW 335i’s. I found a few Audi S4’s with the sports diff and even test drove one that I liked but ultimately didn’t feel comfortable paying $35k for that car as it just seemed a bit dated. For the BMW, it was hard to find one that I wanted which would have been M-Sport, 6-speed and RWD. Most were either the Auto ZF8 and RWD or manual with xDrive. In fact there were only a few 2013 and newer 335i’s in the country at the time that were 6 speed, RWD with the M-Sport package.

For a second I entertained the new 340i with European Delivery, but after ticking all the options I was at $60k. The 2016 S4 was ending production so I didn’t even bother as I don’t believe I could have gotten one with a manual.

Eventually I stumbled upon the inventory list on this forum and started reaching out to dealers by email. I saw that Atlantic VW had a Base 6 speed Oryx White Golf R in stock and was told it was being sold at MSRP. I went to meet with a salesman and was told that I was given the wrong info and the car was marked up $4k over MSRP. I told them that I would only be interested in purchasing the car at MSRP and after about 20 minutes of stalling they agreed and dropped the price.

Here are pics of the car at the dealership before purchase:

03/01/2016:

I didn’t know when I purchased the car but it actually came with Continental DWS 06 all season tires which I know is rare for our cars.

My previous car was a 2002 Jetta GLS 1.8T that I bought brand new in November of 2001 and kept until I bought my R in March of 2016. It ran pretty good considering it was an MKIV and lasted 185,000 miles before I gave it to my brother. It was tuned for about 95,000 miles and still has the stock clutch. I’m not going to lie, I did baby that car a bit.

The car is still going strong and is over 200,000 miles now.

Mods on the Jetta:

Engine:
  • Neuspeed P-Flo Intake

Broken Hatch Strut

03/02/2016:

The day after I brought home the car I go to open the hatch and notice it’s very hard to open. Now there were no issues at the dealership but it seems on the way home that one of the hatch struts snapped. I was like WTF...not a good sign on a new car. Luckily it was not a sign of things to come.

I contacted the dealership and they immediately ordered a new hatch strut and took care of it.
Here is the new strut installed:

Accessories & Unlock Center Armrest

03/08/2016:

Got some Golf Monster Mats and Cargo Loks from SmithVW

Here are the part numbers for both:

Cargo Loks: ZVW-380-301
Golf Monster Mats: 5G1-061-550-041

03/10/2016:

Well after the first week I had to mod something. I unlocked the center armrest as many have. I used zip ties to keep the ability to close the armrest without slamming it down. Sorry for the low quality pics, I didn't have my DSLR for this one but I think you get the idea.

Spare Tire Kit Added

03/30/2016:

Thanks to the spare tire thread on here I was able to source the parts for the spare tire kit. One thing I regret is getting the spare tire shipped to me since that added extra to shipping. If you can, see if you can get the spare tire locally. Here are the part number I used for this kit:

  • 6X0012243 - Lug Bolt Cap Remover (1stPartsVW)
  • 1K0803899D - Spare Wheel Mounting Bolt (1stPartsVW)
  • 5QM011221 - Jack Handle (1stPartsVW)
  • 8Z0012255 - Screw Driver (1stPartsVW)
  • 8K0805615 - Towing Eye (1stPartsVW)
  • 5K0601011AA - Spare Tire (1stPartsVW)
  • 4D0012219A - Wheel Bolt Wrench (1stPartsVW)
  • 5G6863459L82V - Rear Hatch Trim (e-Acca)
  • 5G0012115N - Foam Insert (e-Acca)
Here is the thread where I got this info from:

Nice, how do you like them? I've only been there to buy the car and then to fix the hatch strut the first week I had my car.
Their service department for me was terrible. 8 trips and 21 days to fix a headlight issue. They also chipped the paint, and broke a fog light in the process. The fog light they replaced, the chip they fixed with a paint pen.

As for selling cars, they were about as average as can be.

Lol, I love that episode. I live my life with through Seinfeld moments. Showing my age and yes...it's sad. Lol

Wow, luckily my only experience with them was my strut from the hatch on the first day of ownership. I DIY everything and luckily haven't needed to go to the dealer for anything. I heard that Huntington VW is good for service. I guess I would try them if I needed something under warranty.

I guess you're not alone :D

How do you feel about "zip-tie fix"? I had mine glued at first then decided to change it to zip-ties. Big mistake, every time I go over a bump or pothole everything rattles inside. I'll prolly go back to glue.

I haven't noticed any rattle from that area. Maybe if I listened for it which I will probably do now that you brought it up! Lol. No but seriously, I don't believe I have any noises from that area.

VCDS Coding: Compass, Convenience Windows & Mirror Dip

04/09/2016:

I have a Ross Tech VDCS cable that I bought for my Jetta and did some coding.

Enable Compass (Base Golf R's don't have this enabled by default for whatever reason...at least for 2016) in MFD:
  1. 17 Instruments
  2. Long Coding -> Byte 10
  3. Set bit 6 (enable compass display)
Convenience Windows:

Detailed steps courtesy of ShopDap: http://shopdap.com/mk7-gti-remote-windows-how-to-code-vagcom/

Mirror Dip in Reverse (YMMV it seems for your mirror to remember the original position):

See the instructions in this thread as there is some additional info that might be useful: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...-with-Correct-Return-Solv-ed-At-least-for-USA

Xpel Clear Bra & Opti-Coat Pro

04/29/2016:

It took a little time to decide whether or not I should gett a clear bra and ceramic coating. It's not cheap but at the same time I live in an apartment and I don't have the place or time to wax the car myself. After seeing the work on another Vortexer's car I decided to take the plunge and visit Mr. Sparkle on Long Island for Xpel (Bumper, Hood and Fender) and Opti-Coat Pro. The pictures don't do it justice as the car looked amazing when I went to pick her up. Time will tell though whether or not the investment will pay off I guess. I plan to only wash the car using Optimum No Rinse.

Here are a few pics:

VCDS Coding: Soundaktor Off & Exhaust Flaps Always Open

04/30/2016:

While I didn't think the Soundaktor sounded bad, it just felt wrong driving around knowing I was getting fake noise. I also could slightly feel a vibration from the front of the car (apparently it's vibrating against the window?) when the Soundaktor was in race mode so I decided to code it off. Since I didn't want complete silence I decided to code the exhaust flaps to always open as well.

Soundaktor Coding

1. Main screen of VCDS, Select Control Module.
2. Navigate to and select A9- Struct. Borne Sound.
3. Select Adaptation - 10
4. Set Channel to Volume of structure-borne noise actuator.
5. Change Stored Value to 0.0
6. Click "Do It"

Exhaust Flap Coding:

1. Engine Module.
2. Go to Byte 9.
3. Uncheck 'Bit 2' Exhaust Flaps Installed

Edit (07/22/2016)
One thing to note is that when I first coded the exhaust flaps to open it didn't actually work. I did read someone that you should drive around a bit in race mode, then park and turn off the car before coding. When I added my resonator delete later on I did this and it worked. I could definitely hear a difference.
