Re: Might bew getting a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6, what kind of power potenital is there? (Max Rebo)

Why get a GLX if your going for power? The vr6 is 200lbs heavier than the 1.8t or 2.0 which means its the worse handeler of the bunch. If your constantly flooring it your gas mileage will be about the same as a 1990 Chevy Tahoe. People have spend $3500 on chip intake coilovers and tires only to run 14.4-14.6. Even if you did that youll get 200 crank hp and will never get close to 245ft torque. Do yourself a favor and get a 1.8t. Better handling, cheaper, better gas mileage, rock solid audi motor, and most of all upgradable. Many people are running 13's with chip/turboback exhaust and good tires. Check out http://www.18turbo.com/18t-quartermile.html . Honestly ther eis no reason to get a Vr6 right now except for the GLX features. Do yourself a favor and kill hondas for us! You can upgrade your turbo too! 3000 kit will get you deep in the 13s! The vr6 has torque but nothing compared to a modded 1.8t it will loose on hte highway and on the local streets. The only thing yull beat are hondas and acuras. If you want to play with the big boys and run 13s with minimal mods lets make the right choice!!!

Jesus Christ . . . not everyone's interested in 1/4 mile times.
Sure, a $3-4k upgrade will get a 1.8T into the 13's. It will also do the same for a VR6. Also, 200lbs doesn't mean jack if you have the suspension properly set up, and it means even less if straight roads/tracks are your mainstay. If you constantly floor a 1.8T, you'll get crappy gas mileage, too -- maybe a bit better than the VR6, but it will still be crappy, especially when you're using more fuel to produce all that additional power from a chip or a turbo upgrade. Besides, the guy is getting a VR6 for cheap, it's hard to go wrong when you can get a deal. BTW -- the VR6 motor is rock-solid, too. If we really wanted to play with the "big boys," we'd buy a Porsche.
No hard feelings . . . just telling it like it is, same as you.

Like coilovers are neccessary. people have also spent $500 on an exhaust and $300 on a chip and ran 14.9's as well. $500 cams will net mid 14s. So it wont run 13s without more work. Oh well. Most people cant drive worth a damn anyway, the VR6 beats plenty of faster cars all the time cause you got to catch it after it holeshots you to beat it. Easier said then done from stoplight to stoplight which is where the VR6 is great, not the racetrack.

He drove a honda, like torque matters to him. It already puts 181ft lbs stock which will feel like a locomotive to an ex civic driver. By rev happy honda standards both engines will feel out of breath up top (yes even your K03 has no top end pull by turbo standards. I know I have another car with a T3/T4. It doesn't even produce 3lbs of boost where the K03s peak torque starts. HP graphs prove it too, they look like this - instead of this / up top). Dont get me wrong. the 1.8T is great and has more potential than the VR6 as do all factory turbo engines. I wanted it myself but couldn't find a 5sp version. You just need to get off your high horse. Raise the boost on a DSM, MR2 or WRX turbo and they outperform the K03, its too small to breath. The already tiny T25 on a 2G DSM is considered an upgrade from a K03. A 13sec DSM or MR2 is still considered not fast.

What part of he cant get a 1.8T did you not hear the last three times he said it. Classic VR6 hater you and from a fellow dubber makes it worse. There are plenty of reasons to get a VR6. There really isn't any peformance reasons except the challenge of making it fast but if a 14 sec car is all one desires a VR6 will do cheaply, with low maintenence and V6 refinement.
Why is it that no one looks twice when a Honda owner builds a 13sec NA street 1.6 or 1.8 but think nothing can be done to make a VR6 fast. Few people ever even take off the head of a VR6. Who says the easiest and cheapest route should always be taken to go fast anyway.

Re: Might bew getting a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6, what kind of power potenital is there? (ChaserGLX)

I spent 3 days in a 1.8T and decided and was very happy about my decision to buy a VR6. I did however buy a 2002 with the 201hp 6. This engine is beautiful but, I am having trouble finding mods for it at a decent price. I agree with the goal of 230hp. I want the same thing but it will take a combination of many small tweaks (chip, intake, exaust, small top end differences and other such) or one big SC/TC kick in the butt.
Ask yourself;
How much can i spend on mods?
How soon do i want results?
How long do i want my engine to last?
How did this lint get between my toes?
Aparently you have some time to find what you need. Just be patient and work up to your goal. Get a solid top end, THEN look at boosting it.
