Hey all, I believe the tires that come standard on any Alltrack have a load rating of XL? Is it required to have that rating or will it be okay to go with a Standard Load?

Tirerack suggests SL tires but Firestone (Bridgestone) doesn't.

I'm looking at the new RE980AS which in 225/45/18 are SL only.

I think as long as you have a 95 load rating, it doesn’t matter whether or not it’s labeled XL. The base GSW and 4MOTION need tires with a 91 load rating.

I am guessing that if you never load your car, you might be able to go down a load rating or two, maybe three even.

I'll put my 2 cents in. A few years ago I went to purchase Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 tires 225/45/18r at discount tire...they wouldn't sell AND mount for my Alltrack the Load Index Rating for that size is 91, they told me the minimum LIR is 95 for the Alltrack, they said it's a liability issue for them. I've yet to find in writing the Load Index Rating for the Alltrack FROM VW.
Seems like something as important as this would be easier to find instead of making assumptions. Maybe a 91 rating is perfectly fine and Discount is adding a cushion to cover their butts?
I purchased Pirelli P Zero + and they are surprisingly great tires. Pretty sure nowhere as good as the DWS in the snow though.
