Misterious door locking issue...

So my wife's 99' Beetle door locks mysterious go off. Sometimes the doors just lock on their own and other times the doors don't lock at all and you have to hit the unlock/lock a few times to make it go.
Well today when she got home she opened the driver side door, hit the unlock button, tossed her key in her purse, and then got out of the car. She shut the drivers door and walked around to the passenger side. Her purse on the passenger seat and our 3 year old in the car seat the doors mysteriously locked.
Our 3 year old in the back, the sun going down, and it getting colder out we had to do something. We didn't have a spare key so we called the police department and they directed us to someone who could help. A few minutes later they showed up and a few minutes from there we owed him $70. Our child was out and her car was ok.
Anyone else have a problem like this?

Yes, started to do this, or at least I just stated noticeing it here within the last few months, I'm sure it's just some simple electrical fix, fuses etc. that can be sorted out with some time over the weekend. These types of problems are becoming common on these years because of the age the car is and the milage that a car tends to rack up over the course of time. The same time I really started to notice this, my blinker would occasionally flash quickly as well. It's just getting time to do some more maintance on our older NB models, that's all. Every car eventually has a few bugs here and there creep up. I'm currently showing just under 150K on the odo. How about you Infamous1.8TWB, how many miles you got dude?
p.s. It wouldn't be a fix all but I would look into getting a Hyper Grounding kit after replacing those worn out electrical parts http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Well (unfortunelty) I have to go to the dealership today so I will be sure to explain this problem to them and hopefully have some info to share with you. 2.0L 8v right?

Very similar thing happened in my 98 about 2 yrs ago. They said it was the passenger side door lock not recognizing that it wasn't supposed to lock. IIRC, it cost about $90 to have the electric lock replaced on that one side and it works fine now.

Infamous,
Went to the dealer and they were actually a big help this time. They said to open the door and check the wiring under the rubber protective bott doo-hicky (not sure of the technical name but once you look it is obvious) According to him "This is a good place to start your check, the wires that pass through this areaget stressed easily, like for instance the door coming open too quickly when it's windy outside." So, that would be the first place I would check. Look for corrorded or worn out wiring. If nothing is noticable worn out or needs replacing then go with the mentioned above. IIRC. Hope that helps dude.
