Well, what were you expecting? I bet A LOT of the things that were hyped on the Euro version will be missing here to keep cost down...... if VW wouldn’t, the .:R for would be close to $60K in the US.........
I think it was obvious we weren't getting the IQ lights, being as they don't pass US DOT regs. I just hope these are at least LEDs. Any pics of the headlights?
They should do it like Volvo where the hardware is made available and tech is just not activated. Then when the laws change (if they ever change), they can just update software. Or for the few who have the cable can just activate it hehe.
Certifying a taillight configuration for the USA is not cheap. Plus, VW would have to design/tool a USA specific version regardless. The payback is just not there for the low sales of the GTI/Golf R.
Looks like it could just be a base German model sent to the USA for testing? If you configure the mk8 GTI/R on volkswagen.de, those look similar. But I wouldn't be surprised if those were the base tailights coming to the US as well. Here's some shots I took last week at Volkswagen's Engineering Center in California of the new GTI with IQ lights. Although I am sure "IQ" lights will be different in the US (regulations):
I’m curious where the amber reflectors are on the front bumper. If they’re built into bumper (like Tiguan) or if they’re built into headlights (like Mk7 and Mk7.5) [emoji848]

Was looking through the pictures I took that day and realized this pure white example has the amber reflectors on the bumper. Potentially a US spec but they are still testing these.
I am more interested in the R, as I have a mk7.5 now and my lease is up this year. So couple of things. For me I really don't care much about the taillights, or a sunroof, or even the wheel design. The wheels can always be changed as can the tail lights if you want. I care about if the performance pack will be coming over, either as standard or as an option. It looks here as though it may not as the larger spoiler is not on this picture. Also the Akrapovic exhaust is also absent (which I really wish they would bring over, even as an option) I really hope the performance pack with it's drift and Nuremberg modes come over, as per the page on VW Canadas website. What I am happy about is we will ge a manual transmission whereas it seems everywhere else is dsg only.
Saw this in a listing on one of the German sites. Looks like some of the less equipped models there have these tails as well. All of the ones I have seen from the UK have the full IQ tails. These actually don’t look bad if it’s what we end up with.
Anyone get a look to see if the US version rear turn signals are red or amber? And if those are LED or not?
Tired of being behind on lighting tech the Euro-world.

They are LED... not sure on the color tho. I may be the only person on this but I think the US taillights look better than the euro just wish they had the same matrix function.
Base Golf LED lights for NA again[emoji849]…..at least it’ll probably keep the amber turn signal, or a separate lit up turn signal, which should make a retrofit much easier…..
Looking for a video that cycles all the rear lights (braking, reverse, turn signal).
Also want to confirm we get the awesome front animated amber signal.
Anyone send a video showing US spec in action?
Here is a video showing the NA tail lights in action. Skip to exactly 5:00. I much prefer the solid light bar within the tail on the NA version that I do the dots.
Yes saw this video. Unfortunately that is only the parking/taillights. None of the other lights in action (turn signal, reverse, and brakes engaged). That’s just static parking lights.
Same situation. We need someone in the car with video of the tail, then engage reverse, step on the brakes, and turn the turn signals on. German videos are usually very good at showing all this but haven’t found one for US spec. Here is a great video but it’s German spec. Light run through all in the beginning.
I think the same light turns red when braking. The current Jeep Cherokee's LED tail light does this also: blinks amber when signaling, red when braking.
