I've decided to get rid of my Mk3 gti vr6 and I've put a deposit down on a 2001 1.8T GTI (brand new), but now I'm reconsidering getting the 2002 model.
The main difference that I can see between the two is the fact that the 2002 has 30 extra horsepower.
I'm paying about $1600 USD less for the 2001 because they really want to blow it out.
What would you do? The extra little bit for the 2002 is a real stretch for me, but I don't want to regret my purchase of the 2001.
Is the 150hp version still a fast car? Please help me out here guys and gimme your opinions.
TIA

My man, go for the 2002.
Not only does it have 30 more horsepower, but it also has a significantly better warranty, IIRC.
I'd say the extra $1600USD would be well worth it. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Sorry, I forgot. I also negotiated so that I got an extended warranty included that is good for 4 years or 90,000kms

What to do?????
It's an extra $85 a month for 3 years!!!!

2002 no quesiton about it. The 30 extra horses is noticable. Plus nicer sport seats, better warranty. If you are financing and an extra $1600 is a stretch, you better re-think your finances!!

I can't speak to the GTI since I have a Jetta, but the 150 hp engine moves the car around pretty nicely. Besides, you can always get a chip (like myself) and blow the doors off the un-chipped variety.

2002 all the way. Better warranty, and maybe even better window regulators! Hah! You'd end up spending a grand to get those extra ponies on a 2001, so might as well start off with a stock 02.

My understanding is that the only difference between the '01 and '02 in terms of power is essentially computer programming. Thus you could save the $1600, pick up a chip ($250 from Upsolute?) and get even more horsepower for considerably less. And, chips and many other engine mods aren't out for the new engines yet, so you will have to wait if you want to get serious about engine work.
On the other hand, if you want to preserve that warranty and aren't planning on chipping, swapping turbos, etc, then you might as well get as much horsepower as you can stock.

Sorry I am not a 1.8T expert, but I thought the 30hp gains was from the VW finally reprogramming the chip. If that is true why wouldn't you get the 2001, pay $300 for a chip, and use the other $1300 on performance mods? Also with the 2001 you get the free service until 24,000 miles and if you got the extended warrenty then and are still saving that much you should be OK. Just some more food for thought.

The biggest problem is that I'm really concerned about the chip voiding my warranty. I've looked into a chip and all of them seem to be "detectable" by the dealerships.
And yes, $1600 is a bit of a stretch regardless of what I'm buying

I didn't think the 30HP gain was purely chip related. I think the turbo set-up may be slightly different too. Maybe someone with an '02 1.8T can comment on this.

Yeah, I've been told by a trusted souce that the turbo 'ends' are slightly different and that everything has been remapped.
Please keep the comments coming

Just remember resale value when you go to sell it. You should be able to make up the higher price difference on the '02.

I currently own a 2001 1.8t and I have also driven a 2002 GTI 1.8. I my opinion it isn't that much faster then my car (stock engine). I guess if you already negotiated an extended warranty then your 2001 is pretty the same as the 2002, except that the 2002 has a little more horses. but you still have the 4 free services.
I say get the 2001. save those $1600 and get yourself a chip and some suspension.

Word.
Anything you do to the car could potentially void your warranty if your dealer wants to be difficult about it. I say save yourself the cash. No reason to stretch yourself for the little extra power that you can get later on if you want to.

This is for all those who told him to get the 2002 because of the better warranty

Re: MkIV Bros - I need your urgent help!! Buying Tonight!! (SAPJetta)

I'm in such a tough situation. $1600 USD is a fair bit of money for me (as I just graduated). It's kind of the mid point where it's not too much to pay for 30 ponies, but it's still a lot of money to me.

there's really only a 10-15 hp difference seeing how the '01 models put down 145-150 at the wheels.
plus I never thought I'd see one of the Dasfuls drivin' a Mark 4

tell clayton he's a dork, from his "little" brother
