MkIV shift knob

Does anyone have any experience installing a MkIV shift knob and boot in our cars? I've read that the knob threads on but that it's pretty tight? I have one on the way and I hate nasty surprises... Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Re: MkIV shift knob (JettaGLS)

Oh and does the stock boot just pull off of the console? That thing is hideous looking and is stuck on there pretty good...
Re: MkIV shift knob (JettaGLS)

No probs here...just pull the old boot off, it stretches pretty good. Then unscrew that biatch and toss in the corner (or try and sell it, somebody bought mine as they didn't have anything so I sold it cheap). Then install the mk4 one, screw it on, attach the boot, oooh and aaahhh at how nice it looks, then take your car for a spin and marvel at how much BETTER the Mk4 knobs are than the Mk3's (IMHO).
Seriously though, it couldn't be easier. I didn't even use the brass ring - everything went on nice and tightly. The boot is a BIT smallish for the Mk3's but that's no biggie for me.
Good choice BTW.
Re: MkIV shift knob (Red Baron Golf)

I had one installed for about 3 days, then I decided I hated the way it felt so went back to my leather glx one piece A3 boot.

Sweet, thanks for the info! I can't wait to install it... Another thing though... Does your MKIV knob/boot sit higher than the stock one? Or is it the same height? Thanks again! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: MkIV shift knob (JettaGLS)

Not really sure since I sold the original knob and boot as well as the one piece GTI job but if I had to guess it might be a *bit* higher but certainly not much. I don't really care if it is...it just looks so NICE with the chrome on the top and the nice ROUND shift knob that just seems to fit my hand better than the old one. I like it a lot.
Re: MkIV shift knob (Red Baron Golf)

Is the boot long enough, or does it slip off when shifting into 3rd or 5th?

Re: MkIV shift knob (EuroStyle)

it is going to be higher. i drilled out some of the knob so that it sits lower on the bar and so i could use the new boot that came with it.

Was that easy to do? Or would it be easier to try and cut the shaft down and rethread it?

Re: MkIV shift knob (JettaGLS)

drilling it was really easy. the knob is just plastic inside. i just got a drill bit that was the sixe of the hole and drilled maybe 1/2 inch out. i am going to cuts my bar but i think that you can take the bar out and cut it from the botton so you dont have to rethread the bar, but i am not sure if you can do that. i am going to try it tomorrow in the day light.i will let you know what i did.

Re: MkIV shift knob (JettaGLS)

im actually running Steez' old knob on my car (thanks for the hook up bro), with a stock boot.....
Only complaint i have is that it seams to sit higher compaired to my last knob. It makes the throws feal a bit longer.

Re: MkIV shift knob (JettaGLS)

I did it it looks really sweet with a black kbow even though I have a light grey interior. It seems to sit a bit higher than the previous knob. I had help fitting it but all you do is thread it down no drilling or anything was required. And then you clip on the knob with a crimper and it dosent rattle or anything real sweet. Let us know your results!

Did you do any modifications at all? What did you have to use the crimper for?
Re: MkIV shift knob (JettaGLS)

Yes, it will thread on. It is a bit taller, so cutting it down isn't a bad idea. I had already chopped down my shift lever and rethreaded it.

Re: MkIV shift knob (98JettaGT)

98jettaGt, I noticed you had replaced your seats with BMW M3 seats. Is this a hard mod and does it increase your headroom? I had read about another person making this mod in their GTI. Can you give me the specifics to doing this change.

Wow that looks pretty good for a stock knob!
