I always seem to find something new, and at first you look at it, then it registers as something a lil odd, then you dont like it, until it starts growing on you and your about to take the sawzall to your dash....

Part of Mollys beautiful coupe...

very nice interior

I want the floormats!!!!

well, obviously nothing comes out there.

I did a similar thing to my buddy's fox body mustang, but only three gauges in the center vents. We rigged up a couple of peices of plastic to block the vents as far back as we could, so no hot/cold air would mess with the gauges. Only problem was that in the summer, the A/C couldn't blow out there, and you had to wait for it to cool down from the floor and side vents. Winter wasn't a big deal, floor vents are great for the heater.
btw: Molly, looks nice. Which line of vdo gauges are they?

Awwww Mark I'm blushing, thank you for the super nice comments

Well the gauges are...well you can tell by the pic which ones they are. Not sure what the panel is made out of, it's just some shiny black plastic material, maybe 1/4" thick, but I'd say slightly more. It's thick enough to sit flush with the dash as the heater vents would. I used regular philips screws and those factory u-shaped clips to secure the panel in, and boy is that a PITA. I have to take out the console, kneebar, and the entire face of the dash just in order to reach behind and screw the clips on. The air vents I had to trim back because the backs of the gauges hit them, and after cutting them back I blocked them off with a couple layers of electrical tape (all I had on hand at the time) but hey, it works. I never use the face vents anyhow cause I pulled my AC, and the heat is always on my feet when needed. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Thanks Chris

Not sure what the oil pressure and temp gauges are. I'd say just your standard baseline model? The volts and water temp are factory A1 gauges. Sure it looks a little odd since the needles are slightly different (factory=flat, aftermarket=3D), but they get the job done.

That's definetly a sweet setup. I think VW should have kept the setup that was in the A1 cars instead of going to a little electric computer that was your clock/oil temp/alot of crap that didn't read correctly and you have to switch between all of the different functions with your window wiper control arm.

and I mean install the gauges...

seriously, where did you run the wiring? did you use an existing hole in the firewall or did ya make a new one?

Re: Molly tell us bout these gauges! (AntoineJo)

There's several existing holes in the firewall for other wiring so I just utilized them. It's only four diff. wires for each and honestly right now I can only recall where two of them go without going out and looking at the wiring (oil pressure sender and side of the block for coolant temp I believe). I will take a look at it tonight when I get home from work and post more specific details later. Also as far as grounding, I used the factory ground pillar above the fusebox, keeps everything nice & clean.

Re: Molly tell us bout these gauges! (AntoineJo)

OK, I'll answer Teal's question first, just to tick off Blake
I obtained the trunk filler from a fellow Vortexer, but I really am not sure where to buy them new.
Now, back to the gauges. I'm gonna get a teeny bit picture-happy here. As far as the wiring goes, well I have to correct myself here, there are only three wires running thought the firewall. The fourth gauge wire for the voltmeter is attached to a block of relays that also run the power windows and doorlocks (aftermarket) that also tie into the alarm. It was all done by a shop so I won't even begin to touch that...
The other three gauges, well I'll let the pictures tell the story about the senders. I had gotten questioned over IM by someone as to what all was involved in wiring up these gauges for operation, so hopefully this will help answer his question.
First we have the oil pressure sender:

There's only a ground wire attached in that picture...
Oil Temp Sender. I disconnected this wire also so the piece is more visible.

Water Temp Sender:

Same type of sender as the oil temp, but this has the wire attached.
Here's a side shot of the panel to show the thickness of it. It fits perfectly flush in the dash:

Now remember...the location of these senders won't be the same for an 8v, just for this motor:

Ugh, I hate the fact that I'm missing my strut tie-bar. Still in the garage...
Here's a couple more pictures just for fun.

Who would win in a staring competition, you or that?

Why I won't tint my windows

That's all, thanks guys!

Thank you...I can't say thanks enough for the compliments!
bumping this back up also because I updated a couple of the pics...was kinda hard to make out the senders in them.
