Multiple warning lights ABS,ECS,TPMS,Airbag,AFL - VCDS output attached

Hi,

First let me start by saying I have done some digging and I have found similar threads to this but they always go dead before a real solution has been given. Here is what is going on.

on 7/24/2020 While sitting in a parking lot with the engine idling I got a steering column lock error. The MIL came on along with written message. After about 10 minutes of driving it cleared and went away. I meant to scan it that night but didnt get around to. Fast forward to 8/7/2020 and while slowing down for a stop sign a flurry of messages came up. First the ABS then the ECS then the TPMS then adaptive front lighting and finally the airbag light, I was able to drive it normally but about an hour later it went into limp mode and I couldn't rev above 1500rpms and the Brake warning light came on. After letting it sit for a while and think about its life choices I started it up and limp mode was gone. I was then able to drive it home. From the scan it appeared to be related to a wheel speed sensor but I checked them and they all looked fine. I tried to log wheel speed via VCDS but the right rear showed error. I cleared the codes and they came back within a mile of driving. the next day I went out and this time I was able to log speed for all 4 wheels clear the codes and they stayed gone (but I knew they'd be back) sure enough while backing up today boom all the errors again save for the limp mode. Got it home, pulled the codes cleared it and everything is good again.
On the other threads their were lots of theories
1. The battery is going bad - In my case that could be a possibility since its 4 years old with 75K mi on it.
2. A wheel speed sensor is going bad or the reluctor ring in the bearing - again possible but from the logs there are a bunch of odd errors like wrong component installed but I never changed anything out. to it saying its the left rear one time then its the right rear.
3. The coolant shut off valve under/near the battery tray has sprung a leak and corroded a connector there. I pulled it all out and I didnt see any signs of a leak .
4. I found a small amount of water on the rubber mat in the passenger footwell after a heavy rain but I pulled the glovebox and cabin filter out and didn't see any signs of water ingress.
5. The steering position sensor or entire steering column has gone bad. I hope not since that is an expensive part but .... it seems to have all started with the column lock so it could be.

The car is stock. All preventative maintenance is up to date.

The VCDS output is bit confusing it says databus error but its not clear what the error is and that info is probably buried in the letters and numbers that come after the errors. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would get that battery tested first and foremost. Then, check for any wire issues around the battery terminals.

As for the rear abs, have you checked the wiring from the sensor to see if it was damaged at all between the sensor and when it enters the body?

Yes, I took the wheels off, removed the inner fender lining and can couldnt see any damage to the wires.
Im going to get the battery load tested tomorrow.
I'll keep you all posted on my findings.

I just got the battery load tested and while no spring chicken it’s still in good shape. So I think we can strike they off the list for now.
I’ve cleared the codes and it normally good for about a week until it freaks out again.

I’ll keep an eye on that other guys post on the Ross tech site and see what comes of it

Has the battery ever been replaced? If not you should replace it (age wise it's time)

People have had this type of error, and it was caused by the battery, even though it tested fine afterward.

hmmm...... I always believe in Occum's razor when diagnosing car faults - when faced with multiple options, the most obvious is invariably the correct approach! :)

In your case, clearly the speed sensor is problematic and this piece of kit is involved in multiple activities in the car. I'm not sure how you checked the sensor, but it's an inductive pick-up device (I believe) - so it relies on a magnet and a wire coil. More importantly however, it also relies on a spinning toothed wheel that's embedded inside the wheel housing. For the sensor to operate properly, it's vital that the air-gap between the fixed magnet in the sensor and the rotating toothed wheel is clean and free from grease and from dust.

...and the other obvious problem is that you are using an outdated VCDS device for your late model car. If you intend to keep the car, then perhaps invest in a version of VCDS that is actually compatible with the CAN network in the car (i.e. one of the HEX products)

I agree the simplest solution is sometimes the correct one. Had the same rear wheel sensor thrown multiple errors then I wouldn't be here - simple fix, one screw one connector, done. My point "2" says that the wheel speed senors said Left rear on one scan then right rear on the other. The right has now shown up twice and left once.

When the first error came up it was for the left rear. I removed that sensor and made sure it was clean and that there would be nothing in the air gap. VCDS does have a feature to monitor the air gap but my old micro can VCDS is not be able too use it as it came up error for all 4 wheels. if you'd like to chip in for me to buy a new CAN-HEX V2, Ill send you my Venmo ;) but you're right its time to upgrade.

The fact that this error comes and goes leads me to believe that its not something physically obstructing the signal but perhaps the sensors themselves or the wheel bearings. but it seems odd that that they would both go at the exact same moment. The wheel sensor isnt too expensive I could buy one and put it in the rear - worst case it doesn't work and I put it on the shelf. I priced out batteries as well so I'll replace both parts - with a little time in between so I can see which part was the culprit.

Other DTCs

There are lots of other errors on the ABS and other modules around mid day 07 August 2020 which likely resulted from the speed sensor errors​

So- in story form, my interpretation of these DTCs goes like this:

First - I have to assume that you weren't tinkering with the car at about mid day on 07 August 2020 !

7th August 2020 was a significant date. Yes, the Rear left sensor was the first to register an error @ 11:54hrs (implausible status) and about an hour later, this intermittent fault became more severe; registering as a confirmed outright mechanical failure.

On the same day - but about 2.5 hours after the first DTC on the rear left sensor, the rear right sensor registered a curious fault which was confirmed by the hex03 module - resulting in an actual MIL message on the screen. Also, about 1.5 hours before your auto-scan, the rear right sensor registered another Mechanical failure albeit intermittent

For ALL recorded DTCs on both speed sensors, Fault Frequency=1. This means that the registered errors have NOT re-appeared in any subsequent ignition cycle!

So, the DTCs on the left and right side sensors DO NOT appear "at the exact same moment" . But their occurrence close together suggests perhaps a related cause (maybe). One of the common elements for both sensors is the condition of the air gap between the sensors and the toothed wheel. Yes, each sensor has separate casings, but the external road environment for both is similar - perhaps this suggests the possibility of detritus in the air gap is similarly likely for both (I'm guessing of course)!

My apology. I never know the knowledge level when responding to posts so I always assume none/little. Rest assured that my intentions in responding in the manner that I did were honorable. I have absolutely no desire or need to compete with someone else's expertise in regard to speed sensors!!! ;)

Finally, and again with the best of intentions - perhaps a way of obtaining some comfort regarding the integrity of the actual speed senors is to carefully measure the resistance of the coils in both (using a good quality multi-meter). I have no idea what a healthy reading would be - but sheer logic suggests that the readings in both should be similar !! Failing that - perhaps another approach might be to check the repair manual for a common route in the wiring loom for both the left/right rear speed sensors. Then eyeball the route for nicks/dents - maybe (again guessing)

Hi Don,

Thanks for taking the time to write such in-depth replies. Couple of things, as much as I love working on my cars I haven't touched them in months. The first column lock happened when backing out of a parking space, the first ABS,ECS etc. error was during braking for an off ramp, the next time was backing out of spot and the last time was this morning pulling into a spot.

Since the error with the first time stamp is normally the catalyst to rest of the errors I feel we should look more into the whole steering column lock issue.
After all it was the very first error back on 7/24 and its always the first one to show up in the Scans about 1 second before a wheel speed sensor issue. I can't see how the steering column and the right rear speed sensor are connected at all other than a battery issue that would effect the whole system or worse .... a steering column issue that has damaged a module that both parts report to.

The error is now getting worse, where as there would be weeks between the problem now its every time I start the car and go over 20 mph. Sometimes the lights go out other times they just stay on. I've looked online but so far haven't found anyone with the same issue.

Here is today's log - I've edited out all the no fault modules. The right rear speed sensor is the one that keeps popping up and not the left. Again because I only have a micro can I maybe missing some more details but all it says now is mechanical failure, is that the wheel bearing then? I would have thought it if was the sensor it would show up with G44 listed somewhere in the error

Well its been three months - Here is my update to this issue.
I did nothing and low and behold it went away ..... until it came back. Always the same thing same lights on same read out from the rear wheel sensors, either 0 or some stupid high speed
Then I started to notice other things - condensation on the inside of the windshield in the lower left corner ... I knew what that meant and it was reaffirmed when I went to pull the hood latch and a ton of water spilled out.

THE BLOODY SUNROOF DRAIN WAS CLOOGED!
Heres how I fixed it -

Open the sunroof and poor water down the drain or in my case scoop out the tree crap first - the drain exit is under the plastic cowl you dont need to take the wiper arm off but you can - then pry it up and use a straightened wire coat hanger with a 1" 90 degree bend on one end. reach way back in there and hook the little orange tab at the end of the tube and open it up thats all I had to do and all this sediment dropped out then I ran more hot water down the drain until it was flowing out onto the street via the drain Just like that .... no more errors.

I pulled the side panel off the dash and even used my bore scope to look around and yep there were water witness marks where the rain had over flowed from the transition pipe by the A pillar speaker down the inside of the body across the dash support .... and I assume down onto some electrical connector I couldn't find it.

Its been over a month and some serious rain storms and knock on wood no more issues. Thanks VW .... why couldnt you have just used one continuous pipe from sunroof to cowl ????

As always YMMV - those errors could have been caused by a ton of other things.

something pretty familiar was happening to me, on my Tiguan 2017, same dash lights on, after days of troubleshooting, I talk to a friend that worked for VW in the past, and he mention me that it could be the fuse box on the engine. I order one used on ebay and replace it and it worked for almost more than a year. The thing is that this same problem came to me again. On almost the same season as the last time. Soo I think this could be same faulty thing due to a weather spikes, im from PuertoRico, where is almost 100% Humidity most of the time, but on this season is 100% plus cold. Imma get another fuse box and try to work things out. I will keep you post it.

I'm having a similar issue on my 16 GSW. Water was leaking through the headliner onto the left side under plastics. Unclogged drain and removed spider traps. But now the car has a wheel speed sensor fault which trips airbag abs esc acc and other codes. Resetting does nothing they come right back.

So, how do you relate the water issue in the interior with the fault codes? Obviously the wheel speed sensor, airbag, ABS, ESC and ACC controllers are not in the interior.

My '18 GSW just started doing this last night. First alert was that front assist was unavailable, then got the ABS, stability control, tpms and airbag errors in rapid succession. It did rain heavily on Friday and yesterday morning. Didn't check codes yet.
