Re: My 2002 GTI VR6 Stereo install! (MADBUG)

Great install but I can't believe you spent so much $$$ and time and ended up with this Kenwood (I assume it is Kenwood).
I'd be much better buying some decent HU, since you rewired everything.

Kenwood has gotten a bad rap in the past few years in terms of sound quality. Looks like an eXcelon deck... Good stuff. Car audio is subjective anyway... I will be doing a Kenwood Keg system with Xtant and either Diamond or Focal in the next few months. I have had a Alpine/ADS system in the past and Kenwood sounds similar to me. Some of Kenwood's 2002 decks have been designed to match VWs blue/red lighting scheme as well. Kenwood has gotten their sh*t together in the past few years. Again, car audio is subjective.

I agree. I admit I've had a Kenwood Excelon before, but my Focals sounded much nicer when I got an Eclipse. Not really too fond of their new decks much either. Too flashy for me.

Saw your installation before on sounddomain...looks real pretty. Same thing troubles me about the others with the deck. But, if it sounds good to you...what else matters? Nice install! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Well guys that is pretty good deck. It has some really good numbers to it plus the 4.5 pre out. I also lets you shut the interal amp off to run it with an amp. It was between the eclipse, alpine, and kenwood. The Kenwood Excelon 917 matched the best and was in second place for sound qulity with the eclipse. I didnt like the eclipse because it was too bland and didnt have extra bells and whistles. The kenwood sounds really good with subperb clarity. You can basically tweak it to the max.
This is what I had done:
1.Head unit- Kenwood Excelon X917
2. Jl Audio 650 CX components in front.
3. Stock speakers in back. (being replaced by JL audios)
4. Xtant 403A (Mounted on fiberglass wirth matching carpet)
5. Xtant 1001 DX(Mounted on fiberglass wirth matching carpet)
6. 2 1 Farad battery caps fiberglassed into trunk.
7. 3 12 inch Eclipse woofers with brushed aluminum around them.
8. Whole car dynamatted.
9. 2 Gauge power wire. (wire is blue and silver to match car)
10. 4 Gauge Speaker and RCA's.(wire is blue and silver to match car)
11. Front speakers hardwired. (cost me an extra $100.00)
12. Neon light over both amp with customer built holders. Neon light also in the plexiglass enclosure for battery caps.
**This car bumps hard. You can shut the doors for the car blare it all the way with no distortion or rattle. You can bearly hear it outside the car. If you open the door the door flys open from all the sund pressure inside. Its pretty cool. Other than that I think Tweeter did a really good job on my car and it has been the WOW of all my friends and family.**
