2nd sucks, what else is new. but it sucks even worse during hard cornering, like, i can't downshift and punch it out of a slow turn- and that really hurts. reckon' if i put in stiffer motor mounts it would help the linkage line up with the motor better? the mounts are'nt shot or anything, but i'm sure they could be stiffer. anyone reflect on this?

so you're saying you cannot downshift into second while turning?
Our cars have pretty notchy transmission as is.
The only thing you can really do is:
1) make sure your motor mounts are good
2) make sure your shift linkage is adjusted correctly and bushings are in good shape
3) put a weighted shift rod in it.
4)switch to redline MTL transmission oil
5)learn to double clutch
I chose option 5 for now.. I plan on doing 2,3 and 4 this weekend providing my parts arrive

yup. i've got redline, slick stiff poly bushings on all linkage points, and weight. i'm left with double clutching and poly mounts. maybe i'll do mounts next week some time. double clutching on the way home.

how old is the cup/ball and all the linkage? when is the last time it was adjusted? Before rebuilding my linkage for the 2nd time a couple weeks back, I was having issues with 2nd and 5th. Rebuilt everything, no problems now.

all of the linkage has been replaced with better than oem stuff, but i've not replaced the cup/ball at the base. naturally, all gears feel lovely other than 2nd. i was just looking for an excuse to put some poly motor mount inserts in, counterpoint being that my car already conducts an orchestra of rattles from the interior that would only get worse with the harder mounts. figure if there is a chance my shifting would improve, it would be worth a shot. really just mind tricks to justify spending time and money on my car rather than other important things.

Mine does that into second as well, but only if it's really cold or if I shift too fast. Methinks the 2nd gear syncro is toast.. but I'm going to try some Redline MTL-90 in it to see if that helps. Tranny rebuilds aren't cheap!
