Ive never had a problem with him either...always helpful with findin parts for my GTI and built my trans with a quaife.

Randy was great to me as well!! He got me out of this other '79 Diesel that had major rot issues... The pics below don't show the rust that well, but I had to seriously clean out this car to get it mold free, and looking some what respectable! I also sprayed bug spray in the car since it was seriously inhabited. Also both sides inside where the main seats went had close to 5 or 6 gallons collectively:





Like I said... Randy talked me out of this, and I had to work real hard to try and get my money back out of it... Then I bought his Rabbit with a TD 1.6 compared to the N/A 1.6 in the rust bucket...
If you look closely at passenger side pic you can see where there is no metal at the bottom of the panel behind the door to the wheel arch.

Ok so far I have not accomplished a lot, but I have some rust I need to take care of... The car is in need of some rust repair.
The biggest problem I have is the frame of the passenger side torsion beam mount is swiss cheese...
I thought I had a pic of this, but I don't... tomorrow night I will take some to give you an idea of what I am doing about it.
More about that tomorrow...
I plan on adding an intercooler from a mazda 626 that I got from the junk yard, and also seeing if I can copy this guy's work:
Relocated Battery, and the IC is placed where the battery was with a fan underneath it to pull cool air over it...


Also the turbo manifold made by ATP that is for an 8v gas motor, and then modifying the intake manifold from an 8v... I have the intake, but not the exhaust yet...

That setup is a lot less restrictive campared to the stock one...

Ok so before I can put this car back together I have to deal with the rust issues...
Here's the first which is all ready to be welded with a patch inside the pass fender well:

Here's my passenger torsion beam mount... the frame needs to be reconstructed... I have to grind it down, and weld in new metal:

how is this working for you i was planning on doing the exact same thing, is it stable enough or u had to widen the legs?

It has been on the engine stands for 3 weeks, and counting... I only used grade 5 hardware as well, and the engine stands are 750lb capacity($60 Autozone). I originally only got them for my motor projects, and was going to make a completely wooden rotisserie to hold up the car, but I gave in, and went with everyone else... I did do a wooden header first before the 1/4 flat stock... I have video on YOUTUBE of it cracking 5 minutes after wards... not suggested...


Then I switched to the steel, and I have had NO problems.


I can't get a full rotation out of it though... The furthest I have tried to go is making the bottom vertical, and that's what I needed to access my lovely swiss (I mean German/Pa) cheese.
I also want you to know that I pointed the bumper mounts vertical... if you look at the wooden mount it is actually turned side ways like they should be stock...

Thanks... I will also be putting up some pics of my motor soon as well... the short block is completed already... bored .040 over with Kobelschmidts, freeze out plugs, block heater, all new bearings, and all of the surfaces just polished on the crank, rods, and intermediate shaft. Btw I was within original spec for the bearings... bought my pistons through Randy for 300 and change compared to the 6-700 normal cost... NJ Motorwerks!!

lol... that is the EXACT same timing kit i got...i was pretty sadisfied... it is a "cheap" ebay tool tho, so you need to be careful when using it... ( i remove the vac pum when timing to give extra clearance)
as far as the welder: NICE! Im jealous...

putin' in a sub panel...

Sooo I can't use my new mig welder because I don't have a circuit that can handle the amps... I am only running a 15 amp circuit which is already tapped...
Sooo I am going to go pick up a 100 amp main panel (which is cheaper than a 60 amp), and run a 60amp 220 circuit from my main breaker. I am going to keep the 100 amp 220 breaker that comes with the panel, and I am going to use that as an on off switch for the panel, and use the 60 amp at the main breaker as the fuse... I have been told that it would be safe.
I am not, however sure about what gauge wire I should use to run this... I was thinking that I should use something larger than I need for my application since someday I may want to run more power out there, and then I wouldn't have to do this all twice...
I have a finished basement, and I am going to have to run the wire in the ceiling (hoping to not have to cut it open too much), and then out to the garage (about 70 feet with extra wire included). Opposite corners of the house...!!!
Also the reason that I am running the 220 circuit is that my Aunt, and yes my Aunt, use to be a certified welder. She still welds, but just not as a living like she used to, and has a 220 Arc welder... Sooo I can't borrow that if I can't plug it in now can I...???
Anyway... Riceeatingrabbit is hookin' me up with some sheet metal, and a section of frame from his sacrificial lambs/rabbits that he has out west, and is shipping it to help resurrect my wabbit...
More in a little while... going to go get a beer, and think things over...
