check to make sure that the relay is pushed all the way in
mine didn't make the noise and then I pushed it in and now I can rock out to the chimes

yeah, thought about that. actually i modified my chime to make it quieter a while back, but it didnt' beep before that either. it chimes when i open the door, etc, just not when i leave the lights on with the key out of the ignition. it's actually quite strange.-

I'd say go to a junkyard and pull the relay out of another car to see if it will work

It's not supposed to chime with the door closed. If you take the key out and leave the light on, but don't open the door, it won't chime...It shouldn't chime. If it does chime, something is wrong.
Anyway...how'd you leave your lights on? Or do you just mean parking lights? Because the headlights don't work unless the ignition is on.

My '95 Jetta didn't chime when the lights were on... only when the keys were in the ignition.
