it sounds like a grinding noise, especially when i make a really tight turn, i thought it was the driveshaft rubbing on something cuz its a grinding noise like that.....my cars suspension is totally stock???? is this normal for the dif. to do that?

how do you know its the ASR?? could it just be a tire rubbing the wheel well? Is the ASR light flashing when this is happening so you know its engauging?

I doubt it's the ASR. The ASR doesn't make any noise and it's not even a real differential. Basically the computer monitors the wheel rotation and sees if one is turning faster than the other and compensates. Check the suspension for rub marks.... do you have aftermarket wheels?

i think it is, cuz i can feel the wheels slip, the light doesnt come up every time, but it does sometimes.......could it be the tires rubbing on something? what could it be since my car is stock, maybe if it doesnt rain tomarrow i will pull my wheels and havea look see

The grinding sound is the EDL (electronic differential lock). It works with the ASR at speeds under 25 mph and uses the ABS to modulate wheelspin. ASR controls engine power, and EDL will use the ABS. That would be the clicking sound you're hearing. Don't worry about it, it's normal stuff.

wow thanks a lot, i was worried for a sec.

got the same for my car. Went to the dealer and they said it's normal. Even offered me to try the new cars, and same thing happend.

I too get the grinding noise every once in a while. I never used to because I don't use my ASR in summer but now that its winter I leave it on and every once in a while I hear a vicious grinding sound when the light flashes on. Not very pleasant.

I think the asr on our cars sucks. Half the time it engages too fast and other times it allows screeching wheel spin. Not to mention I don't even think that the differential ever locks because i have never heard both of my wheels screech at once

The ASR doesn't make any noise at all. All it does is use the engine management system to reduce power output to the point that the wheel stops spinning.
EDL, on the other hand, uses the ABS system to apply the brake to the wheel that is spinning, thus transferring torque across the differential to the other wheel. This will make the clicking/grinding sound as described, as this is the noise that the ABS solenoids make while operating.
The EDL does work pretty well (as those who have managed to disable it can attest), but it does allow a fair amount of wheel slippage. What I notice when I am accelerating hard is that at about 24 mph I will get a crazy amount of momentary wheelspin after the EDL cuts out and before the ASR kicks in (it is on all the time, but doesn't do much when the EDL is active).

Is this sound loud? There is a lot of snow on the ground today and I noticed a loud vibration sound coming from the front passenger-side wheel. After the car sitting for a while in a parking lot while I was in the movies, I also noticed a sound that sounded like it was coming from underneath my hand-brake. Is this the same thing that you guys are talking about? It's got me concerned and think I should take it to the dealership tomorrow.
If this is the EDL or ASR why does it only come from the front passenger-side wheel? Is it supposed to sound like the ABS brakes do? If so, what I am experiencing is much louder than the ABS brake sounds.
[EDIT] Oh ya, and forgot one thing... When I turn the ASR off, it still makes that noise on my right wheel.
Scoop.

I agree sometimes it kicks in when I don't want it to.
But...what we have is not a full fledged traction control system like BMW or many others. It just minimizes wheel spin when one of the two start to spin faster than the other.
when you launch you will easily get both wheels to spin a lot if you want, with the ASR on, as long as they loose traction equally.
