only noticed this after going over a speed bump a bit too fast the other day, although it may have been doing it before then - my engine intermittently makes a 'ticking' noise, which gets faster when you rev it. makes it sound a bit like an 8v ford fiesta engine if anyone knows what i mean
i'm sure it's not a belt or anything like that as it really does sound like part of the engine or the valve gear. sometimes it goes away for a bit if you rev it past about 4000 though, but it always eventually comes back!
i'm stumped by this. have i buggered up my engine or something?

Re: My engine's started ticking. (thebassjunky)

as the others have already suggested.....lifter noise is what you're hearing. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

that being said, there are several things to consider:
- is your oil level correct? you may be down a quart (or more)
- when's the last time you changed the oil?it breaks down over time.
- do you have a quality o/filter on the car?
- and what weight oil you run is important
so here's whatcha do....first, go pull the dipstick and see what's in the sump. top up as necessary. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
next...if you can't remember the last time the oil was changed (or don't know b/c the car is new to you) you might just go ahead and change it. that way you have a fresh reference point.
be sure you use a quality OEM filter (mahle/knecht/mann) and the proper weight of oil for your climate. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
do ^those^ things and see if those lifters don't quiet down.

report back to the class w/ your results. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Look closely around the exhaust manifold. See any black marks that would indicate a leak? Check to see if any of the studs are broken. A single cylinder exhaust leak might also be what you're hearing, especially since the sound was preceeded by a large bump.

Mine does it too, has for about 2 years since I swaped this motor in. It only really happens for me in the winter till the oil warms up.

I've gotta run thick oil (10w40+Lucas in the winter)) to stop it from smoking.
Bump for clicking lifters!

Yep, I agree. It's probably the hydraulic tappets in the head.
My old Scirocco GT used to rattle like a bugger sometimes. Then it would be fine again. It could be the recent cold weather that has caused it.
It's wise to use a genuine VW oil filter on your car as these have a one way valve in them that helps keep oil pressure in the cylinder head. It won't cure it but it may help.
