To start, I'll give you a little background information.

I'm 19 and I live in Southern Pennsylvania. I still have a ton to learn but I have been around cars my entire life. There's something about a fine piece of machinery that just captures my attention :thumb up:.. My dad is a profession auto-body repair technician and owns his own collision shop. I'm currently going to school for Business Administration and plan on going to a tech school after graduating so I can open a shop of some sort.

I apologize in advance if I ask stupid questions. Although I've learned a lot over the past 3 years, I'm jumping into something that I've never done before. It's exciting though!

So, enough about myself and onto the real reason you opened this thread. ;)

For a year and a half now I have been in search for the perfect car to receive a vr6 I got out of a gti parts car I bought for a STEAL. Over that time frame, I looked at probably 10 different cars. All of which were over-priced and practically rotted to pieces.

The motor is out of a 98 gti and it has 102xxx on the odometer. I have the entire swap from the motor to the dead axle.

One day I randomly was browsing through Pittsburgh CL and came across the perfect car. Long story short, the seller was moving to another state and needed to get rid of the car so I jumped on it and went & picked it up for $600 . The process went flawlessly and the seller was a really nice dude and he threw in a bunch of extra parts.

Not that I've seen millions, but this is the most SOLID mk3 I've ever seen in SoPa in stock condition. The only spec of rust on this thing is on the passenger side fender.

It's definitely not a show car(yet) but I have some plans for her.

First, I'm gonna focus on getting the engine bay cleaned up in the cabby and freshen/upgrade stuff up in the vr while I save up the loot to do some real stuff to it.

Considering shaving the bay but I'm not sure how deep I want to get into deleting stuff.
I have DE seats from the gti but idk… not sure about that yet either. Lol
I've always wanted a wooden steering wheel…

I'm also a passionate musician so a decent sound system is a must as well.. Lol.

Ok, Ok.. Enough talk… Here's my progress thus far….

The day after I bought it I ripped the dash out and then got busy with school stuff so it sat until now. Lol.

That's all I have for now. I'm gonna track all my progress here. Any thoughts, concerns or tips are much appreciated. I'm hoping to have it done enough to take down to h2o 2014. The thought of cruising Coastal Highway with the top down and the sound of a grumbling vr gets me excited.

Thanks guys!

I lost my spot in the garage(my dad needed to work on a car) and It decided to rain before I pulled the harness out. :p. Once the weather breaks I'm gonna pull it out.

Any tricks/suggestions I should follow when getting the harness out? I should feed it out through the engine bay, right?

Looks like you're off to a good start  you're to do list is pretty close to much exactly the same as the VR cabrio I built for my girl friend a couple years ago. A word of advice would be to hold on to your gti shell until you're 100% done with everything for any little odds and ends you might need. Having my shell lying around saved my ass on a couple times. As far as pulling the harness pull it into the engine bay. It goes much faster if you have someone in the car to keep the plugs from getting tangled as they get close to the hole in the firewall. Good luck

Nice 95 cabrio.
Check your paint code to make sure you have the correct color when you respray.
I am pretty sure that 1995 was flash red.
Yeah, I know. The TR pops a little more than the flash red. I figured I'd see how much different the colors were to see if I could leave the jams and respray the outside in TR. I'm back and forth between changing the color completely though to something more unique...

I was thinking about maybe going with a charcoal gray metallic and leaving the engine bay red...

Nice. I just picked up a 1995 Cabrio. Although not ultra-rare there are a few unique parts, since it was the only year the US got German built Cabrios.
That's awesome! I'm gonna have to check out my VIN and see if mine was too.

Question for anyone: What are the cons to deleting the wipers and rain try? I wanted to delete it and shave the bay some but when my GF caught wind of that she got mad and said "It's not safe to not have wipers" haha. Has anyone every had any issues?

Should I just suck it up and keep them? Lol.

just drive around not using them for a bit, and if your fine with that and there wont be any inspection issues, delete them:thumbup: good luck!

Hmm. That's a good idea! I'll pick up some rain-x and put it on my Jetta to see what I think. Lol.

I picked up a motor stand Saturday a at Harbor Freight. $49.99 for a 750lbs stand. Picked up the bolts at lowes today. Going to go to the shop tomorrow and mount it to the stand.

I need to buy a Bentley manual and torque wrenches before I crack into the motor. :p

Hoping to the get the aba pulled out of the cabrio this week too.

Took a pic of the engine code on the vr, mean anything significant? Lol.

Update: I ran into some issues with my DD so it's had me tied up as far as time and money. It keeps shutting off randomly. Thought it was the fuel filter with 208,000 miles but no luck. Then changed the crank pos sensor and still no luck. Then the coil pack and wires. Swapped computers. Still no luck. I think I narrowed it down to the cam pos sensor. Stupid car. Lol.

I also started school today and am in the process of opening up a detailing shop. So needless to say I've been super busy. Lol. I should be bringing in a chunk of money here in the next few weeks. Hoping to send the head over to the machinist and have this thing running by spring!

Pretty sure they're a required item for PA (and most states) inspection.
