The idle will stick at about 2000rpms or 1500rpms and the only way i can remedy it is to turn off the car and restart it and its back to normal...sometimes it will slowly build moveing from just under 1000rpms (which is normally where it is ) to around 2000??

anyone out there have any ideas as to what i should check?? this is on my '95 golf 2.0ltr

My wife's car (with 50K) doesn't have this problem. Maybe clean your throttle body?

Hmm...my Dad's old Westfalia camper did the same thing and they told me it needed a new ECU!!

From what I understand though, sometimes the idle stabilizer valve will become sticky - and it will either stick high (meaning the car will rev high) or stick low (like mine kind of does). If it's NOT that then the only other thing you can try is resetting the ECU. Sounds like it could also be the ecu trying to adapt to an incorrect mixture setting so it maybe symptomatic of another problem.

check all your vacuum lines. get someone to check your intake temp sensor. or check to see if your throttle body is sticking. also check your throttle cable. other than that no idea.

I agree on checking the throttle body first. Once when I was just getting into cars, I took out the air cleaner like a dumb a$$ and had a leaf jam the butterfly open. Who knows how many made it in before this happened
