Well today on the way home from work my Rabbit got hit (T-boned) VERY hard on the drivers side by a big ass Lincoln Town Car. The drivers door was pushed in about a foot and half and the drivers seat was very twisted. I was pinned in the car for a bit, but worked my way loose and got out without any injuries at all!
Everyone was amazed that I was ok and was able to walk away from the accident. My VW saved me

I hope to have pictures of the car soon, you will be amazed I walked away when you see the pictures.
On a positive note, I had just pulled off the cabby clipper side skirts and fender flares because I was prepping them for paint (they were in the back passenger side of the car), so they are undamaged, and the front and rear clipper bumpers seem to be unharmed. So I did have some luck in all of this.
And I also had not yet put in the 16v carbed motor, so that will go in my new project car (Caddy?).
So now comes the not at all fun task of making a list of all the parts/money I had put into the car so I can get some of it back. Any advice here? The car had a clipper kit (not damaged), euro fenders and rad support, cabby 4 light grill, Eibach springs, shaved side channel, badges, antenna hole, and windshield squirters, modded 8v motor with header, weber TB, cam.
I have a feeling I will get next to nothing for the car and end up getting more if I buy the car back and part it, what do you think?

Re: My Rabbit Is Totalled :( (SeVoN)

Man it seems like everyone is writing these things off around here lately.. glad you were ok and unharmed though. I'd say buy it back. I ended up buying mine back for $125 last month and had easily over $2500 into the motor and suspension alone so it was well worth it.. Taking my time in pulling it apart as it's been really cold lately as you know yourself but you can make back what you pay for it without a doubt..

Tell them that your car was hit so hard that your Bilstein coilovers turned into KYB shocks and that you demand to be compensated. Also, that the impact was so violent that it knocked 12 valves and the turbo off the 1.8t motor you had in it. Glad you are ok. I had a similar experience in my '84 GTI last summer.

Sorry to hear this, too bad...
There's something to be said for having your insurance company insuring your ride for it's actual worth, rather than the "Blue Book" list price. This often involves having the car professionally appraised, and will cost a bit extra when you pay the premium, but in the event of a claim, the insurer has to cough up the whole replacement cost of the car.
For instance, my '81 Rabbit L had a list price of $16,650 in 1981, finding a suitable replacement (with waaaay too many miles) would easily cost $10,000, and an insurance co. would probably give me $125 and tell me to get lost. Specialty vehicles require specialty insurance...

My 81 Cabby was T-boned while it was sitting on my front lawn for sale! It took me 5 months before I seen any money from the insurance! What finally did it was paying a lawyer $75 to send out a letter to them. That is all I had the lawyer do and they were ready to settle. That is when I decided that they needed to pay for making me wait so long! I ended up with $5600 plus I got to keep the car that easily had $1500 worth of parts on it! my advice is don't settle for what they offer and get a lawyer to send out a letter for you(it scares the crap out of them thinking that they are going to have to pay thier lawyer to settle a "minor" claim). Oh yeah and ask to talk to the guy that makes the final decision, it saves alot of time!

Glad you are ok.
You have to 'buy it back'? Can't you just have it towed to your house and tell the insurance co. to keep the $$ if they won't be giving you much?

When my 82 got hit I had it towed to my house and the adjuster came and totaled it then I bought it back from them for $125 and they gave me a check for $2000 and I went to the junkyard and put it back together for about $500 and drove off into the sunset. No salvage title or anything. The car never changed hands. I still have it today and the only evidence from that accident is the silver dollar dent under the left signal light. Things worked out that time. Hope I never have to do it again tho.

my car was T-boned in Aug. and written off. i bought my car back from insurance for parts only. my advice is for you to do the same. you will still get paid for your car, plus you get to keep all your expensive parts and reuse/resell them.
bring in all your reciepts to the insurance ppl. and stress this wasn't just some old volkswagen, it was a well maintained vehicle etc etc..

Re: My Rabbit Is Totalled :( (a1jettagli)

See here's the part that really sucks, I dont have receipts for pretty much anything on the car
I always payed cash for anything I got. The only receipts I have are for the complete brakes and other little things, but they are all considered "maintenance" so they wont honour that stuff.
I know some insurance adjusters/appraisers because of my work (bodyshop), so if I can get it so one of them gets my claim, I will be set.
So far I have listed all the parts I have put on the car and my total is well over $2500. I sure would be pissed if this all happened after I put in my 16v

Well, anyone have a good condition caddy for sale in Ontario?

Passenger side and front are fine -

My legs somehow fit in this very tight space without being crushed -

And I got out without a scratch or broken bone, some back and kneck pain, but that's it!
And on a positive note (if you can call it that), I was found 0% at fault, so I am relieved about that.
