How long do starters last in the first place? How much to replace? Is it simple enough that I could do it myself?

Just got mine fixed. $93, I took off and put back on myself and the local Bosch shop fixed it for the $93.

i was going to have mine rebuilt because it makes some sort of winding noise after you start it, but the shop (remember i live in farm country) wouldn't pull it out saying that it was a stupid design and they also continued to bash the rest of the car and how it was incredibly stupid to shove such a big motor in a little place and how hard it would be to fix anything on it. but you have to remember these guys mostly work on fords and GM

VR6'n huh??? When a Ford or Chevy person tells you you have a big motor, take it as a compliment. I open up the 2.0 and people ask "why's there so much space?".
I would rather have the bay filled myself, but the starter is a bitch even on mine cause of where the bolts are located.
