my temperamental car....

I don't know what it is with VWs or just my car, but...
This past week it has been cold in Grand Rapids, like just below freezing. I noticed on tuesday my car was acting up. I had driven maybe half a mile since starting it cold, and i was accelerating in 2nd gear, and all of the sudden it gets jerky and smooth jerky and smooth in no particular pattern. shift to 3rd, accel, its ok, then sure enough, it happens in third. once i got to cruising, it was ok. next light, same thing. felt like it was just loosing power, like some leprachaun under the hood was intermittently pinching the intake hose, or fuel was cutting off sporadically. It seemed to get better as the car would warm up. I was frustrated and ran it WOT in third to like 5k, and it seemed to "clear out". Once it was warm, it was barely noticable, if at all. It was bad all week, it would do this really bad the first few stops and starts when warming up. Seemed to run just fine though otherwise. Today, its 40 degrees out, it runs great. NO stumbling. seems to be running better than usual
i go get some chevron techron to put in the tank, I add it, fill it up, got 26mpg (avg for me this time of year) and drive around, runs great. sounds great. runs like new. WTF??? guess i dont have to fix anything....

we'll see what happens next time it gets cold here. this is NOT the first time its been cold, but it IS the first time this has happened...
can anyone relate to this? any ideas?

Re: my temperamental car.... (mhjett)

I had a lurching problem.. finally figured it out when my car eventually died..
turns out the distributor cap was lose, and eventually fell off. Probably not the cause of your issue tho.
