my top speed exp w/2.0L

Well this is a short and quick one but last night at approximately 2:30ish I decided to attempt my traditional endeavor of each new car that I buy and find top-speed. Since my car is a 2.0L GLS black/tan leather Jetta, 2002 at that I recollect someone a while ago posting that they achieved 120+ in their 2.0L jetta and then there was the 1.8T's and VR6 drivers posting 130-135/140 speeds. As in significant as this post is I thought I would let it be known either something is really wrong with my car or somebody is really stretching the truth but I tried on a stretch of hwy that is straight and flat as a board for nearly 2-1/2 mi+ and my 2002 GLS only could muster 115 mph it felt as if there may have been some sort of governor in place as there had been plenty of tach left before red-line?
BTW I typically only do this once throughout my ownership and always when no other cars or pedestrians are near.

Ryan, my 2.0 liter MK4 Jetta will only do 115 also. It really feels like there is a speed restriction in the stock ECU programming. Anyway I think there are a few peeps on here that are full of beans as far as top speeds go but I can promise you I have seen 132 mph in my chipped GTi.

Weird. I've encountered 120 a couple of time in a stock chipped 2.0 Jetta.

Even though its an A3 I had our Cabrio doing 120 with the top down and three people in it! All we had was a chip intake and exhuast.

I used to have a 2001 2.0. 118mph was max on that car.

of course you will exceed the 115 limit if you're chipped, as pretty much all chips remove the top-speed governor...stock 2.0's are limited to 115, but you could get faster if you were going downhill or something i suppose

Thanks for the response on this, I feel much better knowing that nothing is wrong with the car. Nonetheless I must say to some pure gratification might be attained by roasting 255 ZR 17'' rubber from a dead stop, or rushing gears through a switchback all the while piloting a vintage Porsche, I found Zen behind the wheel of my late 1992 Integra GS-R, albeit not the most spirited nor most composed at speed but nothing quite sounds like vtec screaming at peak limits, reaching it's top speed just at 140 coming down from this is nothing shy of exhilarating. The aforementioned is me somewhat trying to hold on to my youth yet my maturity speaks un abruptly amid the beautiful profile and rich leather of a Volkswagen Jetta

Well, I said screw that maturity crap and traded in my 2.0 for a 1.8T!

I am so much happier now with this car. The sports suspension, bigger shoes and the turbo sure make this a much, much different car than the 2.0 was. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

i think i remember reading the stock top speed of a TDI is 111mph....now if you are chipped, that number is higher

Perhaps the 2002 2.0 is limited to such a speed because it's drive-by-wire.

I hit a tad over 125 on the I5 a few weeks ago. Straight, level ground.

I went to 125 mph, was still accelerating, but had to slow down due to incoming traffic. But it's 1.8t. I think 2.0s are governed to 118, but I might be wrong.

that's weird...I've hit over 124 in my 2000 stock Golf 2.0...w/no chip or anything...just stock. and I was on route 81 in NY which is really level...so I can't blame that number on a hill or anythin'...peace..

Isnt chipped something like 137MPH? Or am I lost and confused once again?

I think you may have nailed it

I'd imagine the differences can be attributed to the fact that pre-02 2.0's were cable-throttle bodied. There was probably a software change when the dbw was introduced. That being said, I've gotten almost to 140 on the stock ecu (with some help) but I can tell you that the engine 'doesnt like' going above 125......
