Navigation Screen location options

Im ordering a 2002 Golf TDI GLS and I will be putting a navigation system in. I really like the Alpine DVD system but the screen is my problem. I will be getting the "base" stereo w/ cass No CD in dash.
from my research these seem to be my options
the fully motorized retractable screen mounted in the blank spot above the radio(blocks buttons below vents)
the partly motorized retractable screen mounted in the blank spot above the radio(same as above)
the stand alone screen mounted on top of the dash(blocks vision all the time)
the stand alone screen mounted to the right of the radio, (may block passenger airbag http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif) http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
One thing that i saw on a Volvo and Lexus was that the screen came directly up from the top of the dash and retracted down again. I really like this cause it would be high up, would retract cleanly when parking, and would not look bad when closed
BTW I hate when the radio lights dont match the dash lights.
Thanks guys

I've seen screens mounted in the visors. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif $$$$$$$

i think there would be a lot of glare from a nav system mounted above your head.

Thanks for the pics, anyone else?
Re: Navigation Screen location options (HIDGolf)

I dunno about the visors....everytime I have seen them installed, they make the visor pretty thick....plus, wouldn't the screen be really close to your head as well as smaller than the one in the dash ....in essence, harder to read?
If you think about how many times you really need access to the flashers, heated seats (if you have them) and the traction control turn off....I think having them covered while you are driving (plus can't you just move the screen down by hand to get it out of the way?) wouldn't be so bad.
Re: Navigation Screen location options (Ringo)

I have an A3, but I've contemplating rigging up a deal to slide in and out of the ash tray slot. Any ideas?
Re: Navigation Screen location options (Guvs97JettaGT)

is there a way to have a screen that flips down from where the manual sunroof control is? I've been thinking about something like that for a while now.
Re: Navigation Screen location options (sublimnl)

manual sunroof control? you mean like the crank my little bro has in his A2?
Re: Navigation Screen location options (HIDGolf)

well, I dont know what it looks like in the A2, but on my jetta there is the electronic sunroof control and then a trap door kind of thing that you can pry open to reveal the manual crank. Its a pretty good stash spot screen aside
I'm thinking a nice size screen could fit in there.

Re: Navigation Screen location options (sublimnl)

oh, i see. would that block you view of your rear view mirror?
Re: Navigation Screen location options (HIDGolf)

it would block it and i wouldnt recommend having it right there, it might be a real bad position...
Re: Navigation Screen location options (ItsDchz)

damn...didnt even think of it blocking the rear view.

Re: Navigation Screen location options (HIDGolf)

i don't really want a nav system, but i do want a screen so i can hook up a game system or dvd, i was considering putting the screen on the passenger visor, has anyone done this or seen it done that could give me some input? thanks
