something broke the lense cover on the passenger side fog light of our 2001 NB. Light still works for now.
Checked with the dealer and you can't buy just the lense cover anymore so you have to buy the entire assembly for $105. THEN you get to pay them $200 to install it cause they have to drop the front bumper for a total of $300+ for just a lense cover. WHOA!! Clever design there.
Anyone replaced this without using the dealer and have any pointers or tips? Thanks
Re: NE1 changed the fog light assembly? (Newbie-tle)
Buy the cover from TVA, please don't pay the dealer to fix that. You got a 2001 NB and they won't even spring for a replacement. I feel for ya!
Bentley or Haynes manual can show you how to do that yourself.
I know Lea Brown's freeways are killing your car!

Re: NE1 changed the fog light assembly? (Horrido Beetle)
hey you know i had those fog light covers and one fell off. the funny thing is the one that still had the cover on burned out or something. its not broken or shattered it just stopped working. i want to replace the bulb but i cant seem to figure out how im supposed to do that. i actually would like to replace the bulbs to blue xenon lights or some trippy pink/rainbow lights. any have any ideas on how or what i should do?... without having to go to my VW dealer and pay the billion dollar installation fees?
Re: NE1 changed the fog light assembly? (DubLicious)
Haha, I can't beleive they said you have to drop the whole bumper to replace the fogs. My freind the grill pops right out with the fogs after you remove a couple of screws from the bottom. I have removed my fogs and grill to make way for my new bumper. It's very simple. just take a look underneath..remove the screws, give it a little tug and Walla!

http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Thanks for the 411, Oettinger. I've also heard (from TVA) that you need to pull the front clip because one screw is accessed from on top! I bet this will save NB owners a bunch. BTW, any new mods to the Beetle lately?
Dublicious, if you need assistance, just give me a shout, I'll be glad to lend a hand.

Hey no prob....as far as the mods, I have made plenty of changes to the car, since I was approached by my sponsors to beat the new world record being set by the Honda CRX for top speed. Unfortunetly I can't talk about the mods yet, but it'll blow your mind when you find out!

even though it clearly says in the warranty that items such as lights are NOT COVERED it was fixed under warranty at 15,800 miles by my dealer here in Houston.
Thanks for the info.
Ummmm.......WORDS OF WISDOM.....GET FOG LIGHT PROTECTION.....I, unfortunatley, have encountered this problem. I got one of my lenses cracked and eventually it fell out....not the fog light just the lense....but i did what you guys did and went to the dealer to see how much it costed....the assembly wasnt that bad...it was teh labour that killed us.....so i said i will wait and see i might be able to do it my self....So i went home...and got underneath my car....NO JACK STANDS....and tryed to reach under there to get at the assembly.....There is no way in hell without a jack stand that you could even get a screw driver under there to get at anything.....I said screw this and asked a neighbour if we could borrow the pit in his shop...so i went over there and tryed...but still no replacement...it was crazy...so finally we said go ahead take the bumper off...and now i have have little mesh guards over my fog lights...they sort of match the grill which is kinda neat....so yeah anyways...good luck
