http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif secondary water pump failed the other day and I replaced it, so now my heater which hasn't really ever blown hot air now does not have any heat at all, at best it is luke warm. My question is where is the coolant drain plug located and what are the steps necessary to flush the entire cooling system properly.
If someone who has done this before your input would be great
Please Help a Braddah out!!!

Re: Need help! Cooling system info for SLC (redradovr6)

The drain plug is behind the cross wise plastic tube running from the water pump to the t-stat housing. Its kinda of front and pass side, black cap with a shallow flat blade indention in it, about the size of a quarter. Dont bother with it though, because it usually breaks. The best way I have found to flush the coolant is using the lwr radiator hose. Disconnect where it enters the radiator. Then pour water (preferably distilled) into the coolant reservoir, while running the motor briefly. Let all the coolant dump out. Reconnect and refill with 50/50 coolant/distilled water mix (although you might get away with more h20 than coolant in So Cal.

Take it from me, pulling the lower radiator hose is MUCH easier than dealing with that cheapo plastic drain plug. Pull that hose and position a nice big bucket so you can keep tabs on the color of the fluid coming out and stick your a hose in the reservoir. Try to match the stream of water going in to the amount coming out so you don't overflow. Also don't forget to crank your heat on high during this process to clean out the heater core as well. Keep this up as long as it takes until the water coming out of the radiator is super clean and clear. What I do then is reattach the rad hose and fill the system with pure distilled water and drive around a bit and then re-drain this. I always seem to get a bit of extra gunk out by doing this. Then I refill with my mix, which is 85% distilled water, 15% G12 coolant (the pink stuff) and one whole bottle of Red Line WaterWetter. I'm not sure what you climate is like, but you can adjust your ratio accordingly. Remember to check your level over the next few days and warmup/cooldown cycles as any air pockets will work their way out and the coolant level will drop accordingly. I bring the level up using distilled water if necessary. Spend the few bucks on distilled water, it is superior to tap water for your cooling system.
