Need help putting belt back on??Why does it even come off??

Can anybody help me? I was driving my86 cabriolet with a friend and he went to turn the heat on it started to squeal and the belt came off.
I dont know why it comes off but it`s the third time in 4 month period.I`m sick of paying to fix it and figured it would be easy to do it myself. Thing is i cant figure out how to get pulley moved down to get the belt over it .I`ve loosend about every bolt and i cant move the pump down to let the belt on.
hopefully somebody knows what I`m talking about
anyway if somebody can help me out on why the belt comes off..or more importantly how to get it back on .like a picture or a website that would tell would be great .......help me please ......so i dont do anything i`ll regret.......

When you turn the HVAC control head to Defrost it turns on the A/C compressor. The A/C is used to remove moisture from the heated air that is directed to the windshield. If the A/C compressor is siezed or hard to turn the belt will squeel / fall off / break or stall the engine. There may be somthing wrong with the A/C compressor or you are not tightening the belt all of the way. When the A/C comp is activated the belt will squeel if it is not tight.

thanx alot know I know why that happens. I dont really use the heat especially this winter in ohio(pretty mild)but sometimes i use the defrost but i dont turn the fan part on but somtimes i can turn the fan on highand it will blow hot air and nothing will squeal or break and sometimes it will squeal and i turn it off real fast .
but anyway now just gotta figure out how to get the belt backon so i can enjoy my litte beast again......thanx again gearhead

thanx kbs ...but ive only used the air liked twice since i`ve had it (like 6years)besides i think i`m gonna get ride of it for mk2 or mk3 gti or maybe corrado
you gotta gti you wanna sell for under 10grand?????

I bet you loosed up all the bolts. Mine was just real hard to get it to move even with the tensioner loosed.

I think i`ve fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!
AFTER THREE DAYS OF ANGER SCREAMING AND THROWING STUFF ACROSS
THE GARAGE(AND NEARLY AT THE CABBIE),
I THINK I FIXED IT.BEING THAT I`M NOT NEARLY AS MECHANICALY ADEPT AS I WISH .I FIGUERED OUT THERE WERE 2 BOLTS THATS ALL ,2 STINKIN BOLTS HELD ME BACK FROM MY PERSONAL MECHANICAL GLORY OF FIXING SOMETHING MY SELF OTHER THAN CHANGING THE OIL.
I`M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW I NEARLY PISSED MYSELF..............HOPEFULLY I PUT EVERYTHING BACK THAT I DIDNT NEED TO MOVE AND IT STAYS THERE.......

BY THE WAY THE CORRADO WOULD NICE IF I HAD THE CASH I`M JUST TRYING TO DO SOME RESEARCH ON WHAT I CAN GET FOR UNDER 10000 SOMETIME WITHIN 3 MONTHS!! I`D LOVE TO HAVE AN SLC TOO
