Need Help With Spark Plug Wires....

496 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  JettaRed
I just bought some 8mm wires for the my Jta IV.(its a 2.0l) I need some help on switching these out with my stock ones.
Do any of you guys know where I can find some instructions on how to do this. As many of you already know the wires are located under the plenum. I don't want to start taking things apart without some type of instructions on what to do and especially what not to do. I would appreciate any information you might be able to provide. Thanks In Advance!

Get the sparkplug wire removal tool. You will need it to remove the existing wires and press the new ones in place. It looks something like this
and you can get it here:

Otherwise, you need to remove the intake manifold and still need the tool unless you never intend to use the stock wires again. They are fragile and you will destroy them if you try to pull them off by the wires.

If you are gonna change your wires, you might wanna go ahead and check your plugs depending on how many miles you have. I changed my plugs a couple weeks ago and even though I had the plug wire puller tool, I still had to remove the bolts on my intake manifold to get to the plugs. It might not be so bad and you might not have to worry about the intake manifold if you are just changing the wires but since you are gonna have the wires off and have access to the plugs, it might save some hassle in the near future to do your plugs now.

You do not need to remove the upper intake manifold to remove the plugs. You need a 5/8" spark plug socket with a 3/8" drive and a 10" ro 11" extension. Remove the wires with the tool. You need to disconnect the fuel injector connector and move it out of the way. Reach down with the extension and remove the plugs.
If you want to remove the manifold, it's not tough, only tedius. You need to disconnect all the coolant and vacuum lines. Release pressure from the coolant reservoir first. Remove five hex bolts in front and maybe one or two in back; I can't remember. I think they are 5mm. Once you get it off, be sure to stuff clean rags down the lower manifold or cover it over with masking tape to keep anything from falling in.
