Need new tires...recommendations please

I currently run BFG Comp/TA ZR's 195/50/15 on my 88 16v. I really like them and I tempted to get them again. However, I wouldn't mind trying something new. I have been thinking about Toyo's. I live in AZ so I can run the tires all year. I am looking for performance and something that will last more than 10-15000 miles. Any recommendations would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

How much $$ can you spend? For the money the Bridgestone S-03 is awesome - last I checked they were on special ~$80 a pop in that size - you can not beat that! There is NO OTHER MAX performance tire you can buy for under $100.
Michelin Pilot SX GT (Ultra HP) are also on sale, bargain of the minute at ~$60 a tire. Bridgestone RE730 would be similar Ultra HP tire with longer wear than Pilot for ~$80. Toyo T1-S are great Max performance tires, but you won't find 195/50-15 for under $100.
'Budget' tires are: Sumitomo HTR-Z ~$60 (ZR); Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 ~$55 (VR)

Thanks for the info. Its nice to have some brand names to research. I have had my BFG's for so long thanks to Discounts road handler warranty. I kept getting new tires. Now all four have different tread depths. I was thinking of spending $100 or less. Thanks again.

I put some Firestone Firehawk SZ50s on my Jetta. Decent price, real sticky, but kinda noisey. Incredible traction wet and dry.

Pirelli P6000

Dunlop SP8000, 195/50/15, $80 from Discount Tire Direct. Absolutely awesome in the dry, passable in the wet, awesome tire.

Kevin Kevin Kevin...if you can get 195/50-15 S-03s for $80 a tire why would you even think about those SP8000s?

Any Pirelli...cause i like the way they breakaway!
Ive been told it's 'cause they have stiffer sidewalls than
most tires.....
Anyways , i like my P600s a lot and have tried those Pilot
SX GT but got chills when they started sliding....they do GRIP
a lot though.
When i bought my Scirocco it had Dunlops
on it and they were quite good too.

Not like you have many choices for 195/55VR-14 (the SP8000s are it these days), but the 15s are a different story. Just saying if you're already looking at $80 a tire GO BIG OR STAY HOME!

Yeah, don't skimp on tires, especially for 15s, they are so cheap in general. I've heard great things about the S-03, you can't beat the performance. Now if it was a 16" or 17" tire, then those S-03s are big money... but they are a bargain at $80 each in the 15".

Never tried 'em, hell I might like 'em better.. I've been using SP8k's for a decade and loved 'em on several different cars. Maybe next time I'll give the S-03's a try.

Try it, you'll like it! I know you don't worry as much about precipitation in So Cal as we do up north, but these things stick like glue wet or dry. Gabe put a set on his stock VR6 wheels to replace worn out Yoko A032Rs, they have close to the same dry grip as the DOT gumballs.

Oh God, these are horrible tires.... worst I've ever used, with the possible exception of Toyo's Proxes FZ4, which had worse dry grip (and horrible squeal) but were far superior in the wet.
If you're on a budget and want a little more tread life than the S-03s will provide, how about Yokohama's A520? Great on dry and wet roads, and my current set has gone well over 80,000km. Seriously!! Only drawback I can think of is that they're slightly noisy when braking to a stop...
